The Haunting / Rose Red

This was an amusing horror tale, but had it been any more similar to "The Haunting" (1963), it would've been a shameless rip-off. Stephen King can do better than this. Plus, it did not require 4 and 1/2 hours to tell this story.

Any failure to ignore the trolls will only grant them the satisfaction they seek!

I'm watching it now and so far it's the same movie. I didn't recall that when it first aired on tv. Even Annie's sad relatives are 'Nell's' pathetic relatives from the first film & its remake. For me Stephen King has become the king of rehashing or re-imagining his work and what has come before. I don't read his books anymore and yes if a story can be told in 2 hrs he'll do 4. If 4, he'll do 6. While I enjoyed his mini-series 'The Stand' , watching 'Storm of the Century' was painful since it went on forever with nothing happening.

total rip-off.

i just saw this recently and immediately thought, "oh, i haven't seen this version before!" only to discover that it wasn't really a remake of the haunting and that it was based off of a stephen king story.

There were similarities, but there were also differences between the films. You had the owner's interests represented by a family member, and there was the Elenor/Annie connection.

But, as I recall, Hill House did not have staircases that led nowhere, and the owner was not sleeping with the project leader.

I'd be inclined to think of this film as The Haunting of Hill House meets the Winchester Mansion.
