If you hate this movie you have to remember...

For anyone who thinks this is a terrible film, remember, it was made for regular television - not for Cable! Therefore, Kings writing had to be okay with any type of censor! Imagine what he could have done if it had been written for cable?? Or a series of films?

Just my 2 cents. I'm sure I wrote it in one of the topics before - or maybe on another site. But just wanted to chime in.

I love this movie for King's abbility to cross over and borrow from other stories. The Haunting, 13 Ghosts, and of course the story of the Winchester Mansion. Many other cross over ideas come into play during this movie. This is due to the idea that King was asked to write the scariest "haunted house" story for television by the producer. Hmmm - instead of creating a brand new one - they collected all of the scariest moments from past films/stories to creat a new kind of film. Throw in a few other new twists - and you've got a great scare show.

The Diary cross over (when the film first came on tv) was a fantastic cross over idea, too! I do believe King wrote it with the idea of writing it from E.B.s perspective. While I've never had the opportunity to read it - I'm looking forward to it.

Ummm people that hate this movie don't know quality....
this is one of my FAVORITE "movies" ever.
The character development, plot development, creepy factor...
everything is as perfect as it could have been for what it was, a made for
basic television movie.
I have the double disk DVD and i'm watching it now for the 30th time...
it's such a long movie that never gets old...very rare!

Hold your nose and scream "Eeeeeeemmmmmrrryyyyyyy" 50 times in a row.

That scene is a damn good reason to hate this atrocity.

Throw all the cheesy special effects out the window and you still have:
-- a worn out, used up plot.
-- terrible dialog
-- characters nobody cares about
-- god awful acting

I could go on, but the point has been made.

Ummmmm, people can know quality and still not like this movie... "liking" a movie (or hating or loving it) is very subjective... everything that causes someone to like something has to be exactly "in place", if you will... and don't get me wrong... I love Stephen King and I like this movie... but to say people who don't like something don't know quality is condescending and unfair (not to mention offensive).

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.

reply

I agree with you Shadows, everything is subjective. And all about personal tastes and what-not. But it is also the same way, people shouldn't tell us not to like it because they think its crap, just like we shouldn't tell people to like it just because we think its good =)

reply

...or you could both take a frivilous online platitude about a movie super seriously and actually be offended by it... hmmm...

reply

This is also one of my favorites of all times.

There were so many deeply disturbing scenes, like the crows.

I know quality and I find this work to be repetitive, derivative, trite and shamelessly padded. It is a mediocre recycling of other and better haunted house tales and much longer than its content deserves. There is no twist or ending that opens any new doors in horror fiction. It is one of the worst King efforts if not quite down yo Maximum Overdrive. Nothing would persuade me to watch it again voluntarily, except perhaps a writing assignment devoted to tearing it apart in detail.

The thing one has to remember is all the other haunted house movies that came before in order to appraise this one properly and for the most part negatively.

Use the script and get a good director and you have a great movie.

I also have the DVD double disk edition and watch it constantly.

You are so right! After watching this movie with my husband, I woke up in the middle of the night screaming bloody murder. My poor husband got up and got his registered weapon because he thought someone had broke into the house!!! HA!HA!HA! I still love this movie and always will.

I live in a glass house, ergo, I throw no stones.

Did Stephen King actually write this? I was under the impression that he adapted the screenplay from the novel that he did not write.

reply

Ajnemajrje... replied to your other thread. But I'll repeat it here just in case.
Steven King created Rose Red and wrote the script for the miniseries. There was no book before it, and he said he won't be writing one about it. There was a book written as a prequel, but was done so after the show was created, and was written by a different author. So no, he didn't adapt the screenplay from anything. Hope that helps :)

reply

Okay I heard there was a book that was not written by him and was confused as to why he didn't write it. That makes sense.

Thanks

While I don't hate this film, I certainly do not love it. It has a good deal of problems, mainly with the writing (its characters). The actors are fine, but the way some of them are written are lousy and stereotypical of the genre.

The visuals are the mini-series saving grace, and I feel that without them this would have been a horrible mess.

I have always wondered why people watch a movie just to pick it to pieces. Every line has to be analyzed, scrutined, and thought upon. If I wanted to do this I would read Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity. To me, a movie is for sitting back and not think of my problems at least for a couple of hours. This is what make movies great. Not every movie can be Schindler's List or Grapes of Wrath and it would be pretty boring if they all were. Everybody has a favourite movie but some can be so bad they are priceless. Example of this might be Battlefield Earth or Gigi.

reply

Agree with you 100%. Just sit back and watch it. It's a Stephen King story. Basically pulp fiction.
