Lord De Guise/Giles de Rais

I just watched this Movie on DVD and recognized that Vincent Cassel played the same (historical) character as he did in Luc Bessons "Joan of Arc"... that's a nice & clever casting! ;))

reply

? Joan of arc is set in France in 1414 or so onward, whereas this film is set in England of 1380, and... umm... Vincent's character SPOILERS dies in the Reckoning, so how would he be around to play the same character in Joan of Arc?

reply

I just watched "The Reckoning", so I'm admittedly coming into the discussion late.

I think the op is making reference to the similarity of the fictional de Guise character here to the historical Gilles de Rais in "The Messenger", both played by Cassel.

Cassel also played d'Anjou - the kinky French noble in "Elizabeth"(1998). In this role Cassel really gets to chomp the curtains with what is basically the same type character.

reply

Yes but the story of "The Reckoning" is fictious, whereas Giles de Rais was a real person, and probably a prototype model for de Guise in "the Reckoning".

"Of course it's Pete - look at him!"

reply

that's de idea, Cassel plays 2 different pedofiles in medieval times: Gilles de Rais in Besson's "The Messenger", and Lord de Guise in "The Reckoning".

Don't forget there was a real DeGuise family in France, who were politically powerful and close to the throne in the 15th through the 17th centuries. Mary Queen of Scots mother was a French DeGuise.

Not that this has any connection to the Reckoning, mind you. ;-)

But there was a powerfully connected family of this name in real life.
