shareHey there. Surprised no one else has weighed in on your post. I watched "Road To Perdition" again today. And despite how many people have posted their utter hate towards this movie, I absolutely love it and feel it's a masterpiece in its own right. I think Sam Mendes made a fantastic movie, full of great actors that all had excellent performances. And it's funny, because Daniel Craig's portrayal of Conner Rooney in this, really sticks out in my mind.
He does an excellent job of playing such a deranged loser, stealing from his father, a great disappointment to his father, and so utterly jealous of Sullivan. He came across as this worthless, spineless, weak man, that was only where he was at because of his father. And Daniel Craig played him that way SO well. So well, in fact...I remember when they FIRST announced that Daniel Craig would be the next James Bond. And for some reason, I immediately thought of his performance of Conner Rooney. And I told myself "There's no way Craig will ever be a good Bond. What a terrible choice!" Of course, I'm glad I couldn't have been more wrong when I saw "Casino Royale", then "Quantum Of Solace". I think Craig makes an absolutely brilliant James Bond. And I'm a bit old-fashioned, as I grew up watching Sean Connery as James Bond. I can't say who I like best, but Craig isn't any worse or better than some of the other Bonds. Just different, but in a VERY good way. But, it's funny how I immediately thought of that sad character of a man he portrayed in RTP, and how his ACTING somehow influenced my thoughts on him as Bond. The man is a great actor that has some versatility. So, of all of the great acting roles Craig has done, it's still hard for me not to refer back to his part in this particular movie.
Skyfall is absolutely brilliant. From a director's standpoint, a far cry from Mendes' directing of "Road To Perdition". But, Mendes' is a great director, and I feel he absolutely nailed it with "Skyfall". And Craig, was once again brilliant as James Bond. It's been ten years since Craig and Mendes have worked together, and both have gotten better in their craft. It would be interesting to hear each of them talk about what it was like to work with each other again.
I don't remember where I saw it, but it was an interview with Paul Newman. He talked about how much fun he really had working on that movie. And besides the obvious, he praised Daniel Craig's performance in that movie. Something I really wish I could find. Anyways, kind of a long rant, but I just wanted to throw in my two cents on the topic you brought up. It was a good one. Glad you thought of it. And I certainly hope that we get to see Craig and Mendes collaborate on another project in the future. They seem to work so well together. Take care.
