I have a very minor bone to pick with this movie.

Remember when Nitti dresses Connor Rooney down, something about how he doesn’t know his thumb from his dick, or something like that? Rooney reminds Nitti that his father is an old man and that he’ll be in charge soon. He then tells Nitti, "don’t you ever talk to me like that again". And Nitti just takes it, he doesn’t respond. I have a hard time believing that Al Capone’s number two guy (consigliere or whatever his title was) would be even the least bit afraid of a piss-ant gangster like that. The only one I see him taking any sh*t from would be Capone himself. I admit that I’m nitpicking but that sort of bugged me.

I saw that as Nitti just restraining himself because in the event of the elder Rooney's death, Connor was a dead man. He's too stupid, too hot-tempered to have in a position of power.

Yup. What we see is Nitti making the decision, right then and there, that as soon as old Rooney is dead, young Rooney is dead.

I didn't get the impression Nitti was intimidated in the least by Connor Rooney. I thought Nitti just couldn't be bothered by an insolent prick making idle threats. It's like giving a spoiled brat too much attention by responding.

Just look to a previous comment by Nitti. When Sullivan comes to Nitti about getting revenge on Connor for what he did to his family, Nitti says how he can't possibly do this because they have to keep a balance of the powers that be. Nitti calls it "protecting their interests." It's possible that Connor succeeds his father, and he wants to keep these interests alive and well.
