Shogun Assassin similarities

I can't help but think that this film shows many similarities to 1980's Shogun Assassin.

Does anybody else see this?

Mos def. I heard the original graphic novel was based on the magna series Lone Wolf and cub which is the magna that Shogun Assassin is based of.
