He'd also get to take pictures and sell them to newspapers and magazines.

I'm guessing he offed the aunt since the kid went to live on the farm (and took the dog). Although it's puzzling that the lakeside house looks more like an unoccupied summer cottage.

I think he definetely killed Aunt Sarah, I think Nitti probably didn't want anymore bloodshed and tried to call off Maguire but Maguire wanted to revenge on Sullivan. Look at the way he tells him to smile at the end. He wanted to kill him for what Sullivan did to his face.

In any case, it is an uncharacteristic ending. Mike is obviously an experienced hitman, and in spite of Nitti's assurances, he should have known Maguire might still be after him. He would have been a lot more cautious entering the house, especially since he knew Maguire was quite clever in tracking him throughout the movie. Mike showed an acumen for sensing danger, and for him to let his guard down after all he'd been through was a disappointing slip-up in an otherwise good screenplay.

nitti pretty much told him if he(sullivan) killed the rooneys.......it was over for him......

and when rooney sr was killed.......conner was no longer protected

but sullivan was still open game

MacGuire seems to have made himself conveniantly absent, to heal his wounds, and to wait for the opportunity to strike again. Had he survived his third encounter with the Sullivans, he may well have been next on the mob's hit list.

we're all guessing on this one..so let me join in..mcguire was NOT called off..sullivan was forbidden from killing rooney, and he did it anyway..plus he robbed capone directly..regardless of nitti's feeling for mike, capone would have insisted on retribution..and,from a thematic context, sullivan's death was penance for his sins, and freed young michael to create a new life on the farm

By the end of the film, I think it's irrelevant whether or not the hit was called off. Maguire wanted to finish the job whether he was getting paid or not. Why? Maybe as revenge for the facial injury he suffered at the hotel shootout. But more importantly, I think Maguire was a guy who loved his work and took pride in being great at his job. Let's keep in mind that Maguire hung his death photos on the wall of his home. He's like a hunter who proudly hangs his trophies. The man was a sicko. I also think he was being honest in the diner scene when he said that he loved his job. Once Maguire has taken on a job, I think he feels a deep need to finish it. He probably had a 100% success rate and couldn't bear the thought of letting one of his targets get away, especially one who'd gotten the best of him.

According to the commentary, Director Sam Mendes states that Maguire was called off, but he continued to pursue Michael because of the injury he sustained in the gunfight.

Sam Mendes: I wanted to give a sense that Maguire was scarred so badly he had a personal reason to pursue Sullivan even when he had been called off at the end. When he's in the beach house at the end it's because of what he's done to his face--- no other reason.

Besides not being more suspicious at the end, I never understood why he didn't finish Maguire in the first shootout.. even though he was injured... he knew it was kill or be killed..

It was clear that it was not over between them... though I was expecting something at the end...it surprised me, when it happened...

I totally agree. The fact that Sullivan Sr. (a longtime and experienced assassin) left Maguire (another assassin who is actively pursuing him and is clearly quite psychotic) alive when he had an opportunity to kill him was ridiculous.
