He was disgusting. I get the feeling that once we discover the "tail" we are supposed to develop some sympathy towards the character and forgive some of his awful behavior because he was clearly masking a massive, deep-rooted insecurity, understandably so, and using his attitude towards women as a defense mechanism to protect himself from getting judged and hurt. The problem is that Jason Alexander comes off as being SO horrible and unlikable that there is nothing we can possibly learn about Mauricio that would make him a sympathetic figure. And if that's the case then Alexander failed in playing that part.
I have always found Jason Alexander to be flat out repulsive no matter what movie or show he is in. There is something inherently creepy and gross about him (roles like this and his role in Pretty Woman, unfortunately, seem to suit him VERY well). Perhaps in real life he is a sweet and lovely person--if so then he is a phenomenal actor.
From what I remember it was originally supposed to be Gary Shandling in the role of Mauricio but it didn't pan out and they got Alexander instead. I don't remember where I heard that as it was 15 years ago but I wonder how different the Mauricio character might have been if Shandling had played him. Shandling doesn't have the creeper vibe like Alexander does and maybe we could have at least forgiven some of Mauricio's bad behavior if he were a seemingly more decent guy in general.
