Father

I saw this film last night and I absolutely loved it. It's been a while since I saw a film that touched me this much, actually.

One thing I didn't quite understand though -- when she first met Walter at the recital, she told him something amongst the lines of "since my father passed away in an institution I feel I have the right to talk about madness". Then, a while later, she comes home and her mother slaps her in the face and says "your father passed away this afternoon!"

Did I miss something here? I didn't get this at all. Was she lying about her father dying? Was it a flashback?

I was quite tired when I watched it, maybe that didn't exactly help either... :)
