someone already posted on this but i didn't get an answer!

she referenced her father as having died in an institution, then later her mother told her her father died that afternoon.

what gives? anyone read the book and can explain?

When people say that "someone died this afternoon" it doesn't mean now and today but this day of the year, every year. The father died in an institution and that afternoon was the day he died, not on the present tense, but that day years ago.
