shareShe was definitely cutting herself.
We never really find out why she does it, we don't know her well enough to find a definite answer. Maybe the interviews on the DVD shed some light on the issues? I never saw one.
Maybe she was punishing herself, maybe it's just that Walter got her excited down there, maybe she took her virginity. These are the options I can think of.
By 'she took her virginity' do you mean masturbation? 'Cause that's a pretty wierd way of putting it...and if so, WITH A RAZORBLADE? WHAT?
I thought she was probably just shaving, maybe to look like women in the porn she watched?
No, I mean that she cut her hymen.
But I don't know if that even makes sense. Any 40+ year old female virgins here? Does the hymen survive that long? :-)
It looks too determined to be just self-cutting. I think she at least cuts a very particular spot. And shaving ... no.
Maybe it was "vaginal resculpting" as some other poster on this board put it, meaning she performed "cosmetic surgery" on herself and cut her labia. This is a little bit too disturbing for me, though. I choose to believe the less horrific nightmare.
i don't believe she was re-sculpting her vagina, because her personality gave no clues that she was unsatisfied with her genitals. i find your explanation of her cutting her hymen more convincing. she clearly had problems getting into relationships. that's why she still not just lived with her mother, but was still under her rule. also, her total dedication to music which she must have had at a young age until puberty (plus her extreme opinion about music and her attitude towards different-minded people) might have made it hard for her make contacts, so she might have indeed been a virgin.
as for your question whether a hymen survives that long: that depends on the strength of the hymen and the woman's physical activities. since she wasn't into sports, but rather chose a much less demanding hobby her hymen might have still been intact. also, from my understanding, hymens don't just break like that because they "wear out". so there's no reason why it wouldn't have been intact.
anyway, if she cut her hymen then the question remains why she didn't do it earlier. it was obvious that she had a strong sexual urge, so it's doubtful that she would have waited that long, especially with that detailed fantasy she showed. so, another valid theory might be that she only wanted to cut herself. cutting is pretty common among depressed people, but also finds its way into sexuality. since she's portrayed as an extreme masochist, cutting herself in an extreme way would fit her persona
She's definitely not "cutting" her hymen - no need for a razor blade for that, it can be done with fingers (and I'd say it's probably physically impossible to do with a razor without causing major damage). She's self-mutilating, and doing it in a place that her mother won't see.
shareThere is nothing "bit too disturbing" in a Haneke film. If he wanted her to be sitting there, cutting her clit with a razor blade, she was sitting there cutting her clit with a razorblade. If you've seen a few Haneke movies, you'll know, that's what he'd do.
I figure she wanted to be bleeding there, so she did it.
It's been suggested she was performing vaginal resculpting.
shareShe looked very determined while she did it. Also when she took the knife at the end of the film.

That's pretty weird, huh?

yeah good point. Its always really easy to get carried away and over analyse Haneke films, when I think they're usually much more simple. Definately that scene has nothing to do with her hymen or her labia it is simply a scene depicting self harm. As to why she would do that there's no linear explanation in this film because it doesn't work like that. The film is the narrative of the most recent events leading up to the suicide of a mentally unstable and derranged musician. The fact that she self harms needs no explanation; it just fits into her personality.
shareThis has to be compared with Bergman's "Cries and Whispers" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069467/), in my humble opinion. Genitalia self-harm, and "nothing" more.
shareAt last! Someone is making sense and its NOT just so her mother can't see it. As the film unfolds we discover that some very dark thoughts occupy her mind and this is just another form of her self harming.
How is this a mystery to so many people? She is a masochist and deeply sexually frustrated. She gets off on pain. She cut herself for the sexual release, similar to that she desired in a safe, S&M relationstip. Sadly, she was unable to find that safety and experience.
shareThis is the simplest explanation and probably the intended one, but there seems something fishy to me in the way she goes about it ...

The way she acts so masochistically and, in a way, sadistically, I think she cuts her labium not only to get pleasure out of the cutting itself. When she watched the couple in the car (or the student getting hurt) she rapidly started peeing and with ulcered labium she must have felt a GREAT pain. Thus, knowing she was a masochist, I think urinating was a way to satisfy sexually.
P.S. It's impossible to lose virginity with a razor blade. If she attempted such an action, she would have bleeded to death, not just lost a drop of blood. Imagine a razor blade "travelling" into this internal organ quite deeply and cutting all the sides...

Exactly. Quite an example, I hope people will now understand how absurd the idea of a razor inside a vagina is.

I can see the confusion with this scene. It could be due to a goof maybe? Re-watched it last night (with upgraded high def screen) and when she sits on the edge of the bath, you can see she is wearing underwear, yet when she gets up, she makes a motion like she is pulling her underwear back up. Before i noticed that, i always assumed it was just regular self harming near the top of her leg where it wouldn't be noticed by anyone. The movie seems to make it seem ambiguous as to what exactly she was doing. After she was done she grabbed a pad (correct me if i'm wrong but it looked like one to me) to stop the bleeding, but we can't really see where she put it other than between her legs. If she didn't put it in her underwear, then how was she able to walk naturally over to the sink while holding something between her thighs - it would have looked more like an awkward shuffle.
Also, when her mother points out the blood to her, there is a quick shot of the blood and she is really bleeding profusely! Her thigh looks totally covered in blood.
tinasparklesau, the movie is on YT, so I just re-watched that scene, twice to make sure. When she sits on the edge of the tub, she's sans underwear. She initially wipes away the blood with a small wad of tissue (toilet tissue or facial tissue), then she takes a pad, pulls off the adhesive strip, puts it between her legs (I think she's clenching it between her vulva, which isn't difficult to do) with the adhesive side down so it will adhere to her undies, and then puts on her undies, which are on the seat of the closed toilet.
shareSome of the responses here suprised me big time. Seriously, shaving? Nobody shaves with a razorblade with such a danger of it slipping. It's obvious she was cutting herself. You can see it first doing it on a right leg, then on the left leg. It was probably a good location for her because nobody could see the scars and because it was close enough to her genitals to give her some sexual pleasure (since she was a masochist).
Also, it was obvious she had a routine because she didn't panic at the sight of blood (which I assume you do when you cut yourself for the first time) or when her mother called. She cleaned everything in order and put the razor back in her purse, all of that implying she is doing this quite regularly.
Because it's how she gets off. Simple.
I remember saying "I hate you, Michael Haneke" when that scene happened. It made my body contort for about five minutes...
