What was that all about? It looked like a random spray of disrupter fire across the saucer section to me... and it did disabled the ships dorsal shields.

I always assumed it was striking strategically chosen weak-point across the dorsal section, thus weakening the shields in only a few hits.

Exactly correct. Apparently people don't understand what the term "attack pattern" means. Google is your friend people. It's essentially like a "play" in sports. A coordinated series of movements and actions designed to accomplish a specific task.
