Is this going to flop?
I hope not, I'm a big Ben Affleck fan, but he is in a kind of a slump at the moment with box office hits. I do believe that "The Grudge" should edge this movie out. What do you guys think?

I will give this movie 5/10 rating

I actually got a chance to see it at an advance screening last night, and it's definitely better than I expected. The audience certainly liked it as well. Rather than re-typing it all, check out my review at Ain't-it-Cool-News.

I had a chance to see it last night also and, in my opinion, it IS a flop.
What in the world was Ben Affleck thinking? The movie is not funny and he came off looking like he had an IQ of about 70, but was supposed to be a wildly successful ad man.
It did not compute.

I agree. I saw it today cuz my girlfriend got a free pass. It totally sucked. A lot worse than i expected. Affleck's character has no substance whatsoever; come to think of it, the whole plot is pretty hollow. I was so glad it was over; not a moment too soon i might add.
shareWho cares about substance. Do you understand what they were going for. It certainly wasn't substance. I thought it was terribly funny. Sure, I've seen Affleck funnier. But I wasn't disapointed (and I didn't have low expectations either). A lot of people on this board probably wouldn't appreciate it though. So... just don't bother with it. I know I enjoyed it
"No, not next period, Right Now! Right Now! I'll take it right now! I'm ready for the test."
It most certainly WILL flop, I have no doubt. Why? For one, it's bad; and for two, IT'S A CHRISTMAS MOVIE IN FRIGGIN' OCTOBER!!!
shareAs much as I love Christmas, I wouldn't go see a Christmas movie in October. But I don't care if it flops. A movie does not have to be bad to flop. I'm still going to see it when it's released in Denmark (in December). Or I think I will see it.
I'm not saying this to hurt your feelings but ... you really stink.
Surviving Christmas will be Number One. Who on Planet Earth would go see The Grudge?

Kill Bill Vol. 1
Im seeing "The Grudge" because I'd rather sit through a simple, easy-scares, unlogical horror movie than sit through Affleck garbage.
Plus, I dont see Christmas movies until December.
I think this movie will make up to at least 20 million, and thats the nicest way I can put it...

This film could flop as badly as "Gigli" - its only receieved 5% positive reviews on www.rottentomatoes.com - even Gigli had 7%!! Poor Ben Affleck, I think this film could well mark the end of his career... depending on how much they are advertising this movie in the US, I think it will have an opening less than $10 million, which probably means it will not make $20 million - I doubt it will even be showing in many theatres come December.
shareNothing will mark "the end of his career"...after all, his friend Matt Damon was in an even longer string of unsuccessful films, until Ocean's 11 and Bourne came along.
Affleck and Gandalfini seem to be a little "eh" about Surviving Christmas, and it's been on the shelf so long that it could just be studio fodder.
I agree, it's going to take a lot more than a few bad movies to ruin Ben Affleck's career. If you ask me, both Affleck and Matt Damon have been pretty successful in what they have done, they have recieved the acclaim that they deserve for being so good at what they do. They are already superstars, why can't they just do fun films that come along?
What do you consider to be an "unsuccessful" film? I don't see how "Good Will Hunting" or "Saving Private Ryan" would be considered "unsuccessful" films. "The Legend of Bagger Vance" was in there too, and that was a pretty good movie.

It certainly is flopping big time where I live and the local ( and national) reviews are horrible too. It may not sink his career but it definitely won't help it. Maybe he will do better with that reality show he and Damon are supposedly working on for Spike tv. And while I really liked the Bourne movies ( until they killed off Franka Potente), Matt Damon, good actor that he is , had not had a decent hit since Good Will Hunting and Oceans 11. Oceans 12 will probably do well because the same ensemble cast is back. He is called a superstar because the Bourne pictures have earned a ton of money and he got a ton of publicity. What's Affleck's excuse - J LO???
shareThanks for spoiling the Bourne movie. Good going there.
shareHonestly, the last place I expected to have the Bourne sequel spoiled for me was in the discussion boards for Surviving Christmas. How do we get from Surviving Christmas's box office validity to giving away plot details to The Bourne sequel? Something has gone horribly wrong...
sharealready a flop
Debuting far behind with only $1.4M, according to estimates, was the poorly-reviewed Ben Affleck comedy Surviving Christmas on its way to a weekend take of around $4M for DreamWorks.
ok i saw kevin smith last night at my school and he's good friends w affleck and he even said that this movie is gonna suck so...yeah...interpret that as you will
and i know i'm indestructible-ta
~~~erica~~~
There was no script when they shot this - and it shows. I really thought it'd be funny.
shareI'm sorry guys, I didn't mean to give away the Bourne movie plot. It's been out since July and discussed ad infinitum so I didn't think there would be a problem. The movie is still worth seeing and is even better than the first. Sorry again.
shareOh yeah, I forgot: Matt Damon and his movie crept into my reply because someone had already mentioned him in relationship to Ben Affleck and superstardom. Doesn't change this fact: Surviving Christmas is a big time bomb . Too bad Affleck can't deny he did it, lol.
shareWell, estimates put the opening at 4.5 million. Gigli opened with 3.7 million but played on less screens. Ben's career is OVER!
I hope this isn't a flop. I thought the movie was so cute.
shareWell at least the dvd will be out for Christmas
Affleck should do what Jim Rome ( Espn's show "Jim Rome Is Burning") advised the Yankee pitcher to do( Kevin Brown, I think) after the fiasco in NY : walk into your bosses office and give your check back. And to think there are people living under bridges in this country while this man ( B A) picks up millions of dollars for this rot, lol. Wheres the justice in this world.
shareWhy don't all of you people who constantly complain about his acting try it for yourselves? I'm sure if it was as easy as you seem to portray it, anyone could do it, correct? At least Ben Affleck is out there trying, maybe not as well as some other actors, but I doubt I've seen any of you whiners on the big screen. I'm sure my money hasn't found its way into any of your pockets via the hollywood circuit. So, either quit your bitching, or get into the movie industry so you can do something about it first-hand.
I'm sorry. I don't make the world's movie ticket sales, the idiots who saw The Grudge do! By the way, it's crap, and I didn't even see it.
