Surviving Christmas vs. Christmas with the Kranks

Which do you think will gross more in box office and DVD sales?

I'd say Christmas with the Kranks because I think it has a phenomenal cast, is based on a bestselling novel, and will be publicized up and down. I said it on its board, but I think Christmas with the Kranks will become a classic, up in the ranks with A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation.

Surviving Christmas looks funny, but, although I have never held grudge against Affleck, I think he might ruin this otherwise fine cast.

I will still see both, though. Any other comments?

I'd see both movies but I like Surviving Christmas more...

I liked the trailer to Christmas with the Kranks a little better then Surviving christmas plus i like the cast of CWTK a little bit better too. Although I think Surviving christmas is also going to be really good too..both look really funny although they don't hold anything to ELF! lol

Let's look at the facts here: "Christmas with the Kranks" changed its title to something silly, and is marketed with a trailer comprised almost completely of people falling down, falling over, getting kicked in the groin, or having their eyebrows waxed. It stars Tim 'The Toolman' Taylor.

"Surviving Christmas" features Tony Soprano cracking Ben Affleck on the head with a snow shovel.

Read that last sentence again.

If you like people falling down for 90 minutes, more power to you. I'm sure you'll enjoy the "Meet the Parents" sequel very much, too. But I'm taking Tony Soprano, and Tim-Allen-falling-off-the-roof-again can just go take a whiz.

reply

I don't trust trailers anymore because I've been fooled too often by them, seeing lousy movies that had good trailers and missing good movies that had lousy trailers. Well, not really because I did go by more reliable criteria than trailers and therefore have seen the good movies in spite of their lousy trailers. And the CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS title is an insult to the source, John Grisham's SKIPPING CHRISTMAS. All the same, I have hopes for CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS and right now figure I'll more likely see it.

HYSTERICAL POST, Quicksand!!!

You make a great point! And Cristina Applegate, Catherine O'Hara and a host of funny actors will make Surviving Christmas the WINNER!!!

CHRISMAS WITH THE KRANKS, DUH! It has a better cast than Surviving Christmas. CWTK: Tim Allen& JLC(WooHoo!!) Surviving Christmas: Ben Affleck( what the crap?!)

reply

Everyone seems to say Christmas With The Cranks because it has "such a great movie cast"...But what about James Gandolfini and Catherine O'Hara?! They are both unbelievably talented actors.

I know alot of people won't see it because of Ben Affleck, but c'mon, give it a chance! lol

Anyways, I will most likely end up seeing them both, because I am too a fan of Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis...But I might enjoy Surviving Christmas more because I'm a huge fan of James Gandolfini and Catherine O'Hara...

I don't really see why everyone hates Ben Affleck so much. I mean, he did do Gigli, but at least he wasn't a bitch about it. He even went on Leno to talk about some of the bad reviews it got and he even brought in some of his own. And, although, most may disagree, I actually really liked Daredevil and Paycheck, but I haven't gotten to see Jersey Girl. I also think Affleck is funny on SNL, so I don't see why so many people hate him. I hope the people that talk *beep* about him have at least seen Good Will Hunting, Chasing Amy, and his small, but very funny role in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Anyway, Surviving Christmas, in my opinion, looks pretty funny. I really like James Gandolfini, obviously from the Sopranos, and I think seeing him in a comedic role will be good since he's friggin' Tony Soprano. I like Tim Allen but this just seems like another movie trying to make it simply from fans of Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis.

And finally, I'll probably end up seeing both so it doesn't really matter, they'll both get my $9.

I would think Christmas With The Cranks will do better, though judging from the trailers I think Surviving Christmas looks a lot better, and only think CWTC will be more well recieved because people seem to hate Affleck. I love the guy, and think this movie looks really funny. Christmas with the Cranks looks good too, but I'd rather see this.

I adore Ben Affleck. Jersey Girl kind of bombed, but it was a really good movie that just got *beep* over because it had Ben and Jennifer in it and was released right after everyone started hating them. Gigli sucked hardcore, and I didn't see Paycheck or Sum of All Fears. I think he needs a comedy like this to kind of revive his career, even though I don't really think it's been ruined.

Everyone is WAY too harsh on Ben Affleck. He is a perfectly fine actor, if not an exceptional one. For example, Chasing Amy, Good Will Hunting, and Glory Daze(minus the haircut). He's also really funny in all the other Kevin Smith movies, Jersey Girl included. The only Kevin Smith movie he wasn't good in was Clerks, and thats because he wasnt in it. Why aren't people making fun of Tim Allen instead? Santa Clause 2 was stupid, Joe Somebody was horrible, and Big Trouble wasn't even very funny, although Jason Lee freakin' rocks. Surviving Christmas all the way, and don't forget, "Phantoms like a motherf***er!!!"

reply

Well I personally like Tim Allen movies, but don't forget Galaxy Quest, which I think is the stupidest movie he has made. I didn't think Zoom was that great either and I agree with Big Trouble and Joe Somebody. But he also made some of my favorites like For Richer For Poorer. I think all actors have their stinkers. Overall I think I like Ben Affleck though I didn't enjoy Jersey Girl as much as some of the others. You can't expect to love every single movie an actor makes.

reply

I've seen both...and I like "Survivng Christmas" better than "Christmas with the Kranks"... although CWTK is probably more "family friendly".

I do like Ben Affleck. I thought "Jersey Girl" was cute. I think he is talented...creative. I still remember how much I liked "Push, Nevada". I wonder if he'll go into politics one day.

reply

I agree, I dont understand why everyone hates Ben Affleck either. For over a year he couldnt get off a magazine cover because of his relationship with Jen and the two movies that were considered bad Gigli and Jersey Girl. I for one thought Jersey Girl was really cute and I dont think he did a bad job in it at all. Plus he has always had a great sense of humor about everything that has happened to him. I am looking forward to Surviving Christmas and I dont really care that its being open in October, plus it does have James Gandolfini and ahovel to beat Affleck over the head with. December and November are the last chance for Oscar nominated movie releases so I can see why they would move this off those dates to at least try and get some money in before the beginning of November. Ill probably see Christmas with the Kranks also because it has equally likable cast.

reply

I am a not so closeted Affleck fan. Met him while he was filming Pearl Harbor. He was an extremely nice guy. Seemed very normal every day kind of guy, someone you'd want as a friend. I have a lot of respect for the guy-way more than Tim Allen(who is way past his prime). Gigli sucked, JErsey Girl was cute, and "Phantoms was the bomb" :)

reply

They both have great plot! I'll see them both. I love Jamie Lee and Tim, but I also love Christina Applegate and Catherine o'hara! Anyways I love christmas movies. Why don't you wait to see the movies before to vote?? Well, that's what I'll do. Christmas rules.

I got a chance to see Surviving Christmas last night and it's actually pretty good. Rather than re-typing it here, you can check out my review on Ain't-It-Cool-News: http://www.aintitcoolnews.com/display.cgi?id=18648

I liked it, but I think CwtK will do better box office because it looks like it will be better for kids, and Christmas movies do best with families. Surviving Christmas is PG-13 and fairly risque. I certainly wouldn't reccommend it to families with kids under twelve. Whereas, CwtK is only PG and looks to be significantly more family-friendly.

While we all know SC bombed, from the trailers, SC looked infinitely better than Kranks. SC made my Top 13 Most Anticipated of the Fall, while Kranks made the Bottom 7.

I saw both films, and Christmas with the Kranks was awful.

Am I supposed to laugh at the neighbors' reactions and antics when the Kranks decide to skip Christmas? I didn't.

Am I supposed to laugh at the restaurant scene where Tim Allen shows up all botoxed, and can't eat or drink? I didn't.

Am I supposed to feel touched when he gives away the tropical cruise to the terminally ill neighbor? I wasn't.

Surviving Christmas was better. The irony and mean-spirited hunmor were better served here.

I HATED Christmas with the Kranks!!! I almost got up and walked out. Surviving Christmas was much better. I think it should not have come out in October...I really think that hurt it since people just were not in the Christmas mood at that time. I thought the movie was very cute. I liked it so much I bought the DVD.

reply

Both sucked. Surviving Christmas has some tolerable humor, though.

But both sucked.
