Number 6

thomas jane talks about how ruth was 3, gehrig was 4, and dimaggio was 5 so he hated being next in line with number 6. However, he moved on to number 7 and became of the greatest of all time so that still leaves number 6 empty, while derek jeter has worn number 2 and has been the greatest yankee since mantle. So with the yankees soon to retire jerseys 1-10 with the exception of 6 when do you think there will be a player with the caliber to fit in with these greats and get number 6 retired?

reply

1) Mickey Mantle is NOT the greatest of all time. Ruth and Gehrig are definitely 1 and 2.

2) Sooner or later someone will become #6, as the single digits are running out. However, I believe the Yankee organization waits to give people single digit numbers to their most prized prospects that have potential to be great (ie: Mantle and Jeter). So, I believe #6 won't be given to just any great random player that comes in via trade or free agency, it will have to be a true yankee. Hence why A-rod is #13.

pretty sure Joe Torre will have his number 6 retired with the Yanks.
