McGuire cheated and then lied...

he will NEVER be in the Hall of Fame. Roger Maris is and always will be THE HOME RUN KING. These Ball players today, most of them aren't worth a damn. Barry Bonds should have been drummed out long ago. No integrity. Shameful.

What, you mean you didn't believe McGwire when he told the commission that he was not there to talk about the past? He said it at least 10 times!

Maybe he'd have been more convincing if he pointed at the commission and said "I am not here to talk about the past... Period!"

I hope that what happened to Pete Rose happens to guys like McGwire, Palmeiro, and Bonds. It's not so much the fact that they cheated (or bet on baseball), but that they simply refused to own up to it. I've read articles speculating that if Rose had admitted his gambling right away, he probably would have been forgiven, and been inducted to the HOF. I believe it. I think sports fans are willing to forgive - sometimes a bit too willing - but there's got to be some kind of remorse.

I think most forget that steroids simply weren't illegal in baseball until three years ago, yet we expect the players to have shunned them in all the years leading up to '05. What hypocrisy.

Nobody cared about steroids during the great home run chase of '98, and that means NOBODY. Not the players, not the fans, not the media, not the owners, not the union, not the commissioner's office or the leagues, NOBODY. Sports Illustrated named '98 the greatest sports year ever.

As far as I'm concerned, I think that the steroid question should be handled like the 154 or 162-game schedule in the case of Maris and Mantle. Just let it go, the record's a record.

Steroids didn't give Barry Bonds his batting speed or his hitter's eye. He is, like Ernie Banks said, the legitimate HR king. All this flap about Bonds is about personality, not steroids.

Sure, Barry's a jerk, and the media weenies are out to crucify him for all the crap he gave them. I don't like the guy, either, but he is the Home Run King, so deal with it.

But they were prescription drugs, just are they are now, and their misuse to enhance performance was as illegal then as it is now.

Windmills do not work that way!

Read my lips, sugar bear! Baseball did not ban them! Do you speaka the English?
And manipulating prescriptions as a crime! Gimme a break. Let's crucify Nolan Ryan because he once went 38 in a 35-mph zone!

Or let's kick Gaylord Perry out of the Hall because he threw a pitch that was and is illegal in baseball! Got any more specious arguments, Mr. Wizard?

I have to agree with you about it doesnt help you hit the ball. Now Bonds and McGwire were great ball players before the steroid area. You have to remember that when you are all juiced up a long fly ball ball is now a home run. No one can ever say that Bonds cant hit the ball http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?statsId=3918 this is Bonds stats for his career and look at what happens steroids became a issue. The stats became to decline and his at bats became to decline finnally his age caught up to him the way a 40 something ball players should do. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=1738 Here is the same for McGwire. I feel bad for the players who did it the right way and not cheated to get some record or a big pay day. Can you imagine how many home runs Ruth would of had on the juice. Aaron, Frank Robinson, Mike Schmidt, Harmon Killabrew, the list of endless and to think how many Mantle would have had. The perfect example to a home run hitter for our generation in my opinon is Ken Griffey Jr.as a Mariner seattletimes.nwsource.com/.../19/2003753725.jpg and now artfiles.art.com/images/-/Ken-Griffey-Jr---50...
I am sure you can find more players then just Griffey But he is a true hitter http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=2148 the numbers dont lie his number are correct with his age. Thank you for your time

What about A-Rod?

reply

A-Rod is someone I forgot I apoligize but he is defintly up there

reply

Someday A-Rod might pass Roger Maris and everyone will recognize him as the one that really broke it. He came close last year with 54, which is great for a right-hander in Yankee Stadium. Ryan Howard hit 58. People were saying Howard would be the one to "really" do it, but he came up short and then A-Rod came up short. But Someday A-Rod might definitely have the career homerun record. If he passes Hank Aaron, the rightful homerun king, he will we be the homerun king. Everyone wants to see it happen and I hope it does.

Who cares if they weren't illegal in baseball, they're illegal in the United States! Did you seem to forget that? You can be arrested if caught with steroids. And yes, steroids did give Bonds better bat speed. Not his batter's eye, I'll give him that. He had that way before he started cheating. But if you still refuse to believe that Barry Bonds cheated, I urge you to look at the numbers. It took him 12 years to hit 500 home runs, and then he hit 100 in just 2 seaaons? Hmmmmmmm. And for a man who never hit 50 home runs in one season in his entire career suddenly launches 73? Please. Plus, the man was solid muscle with no fat on him in his 40s. No 40 year old player looks like that without steroids. Proof? Moises Alou. He's in his 40s and is always getting hurt. Bonds got hurt, but recovered faster thanks to steroids and HGH. Plus, from 2000 to 2001, he put on 40 pounds of muscle and his head blew up like a balloon. Please. Anyone who thinks Barry Bonds broke his records on his own has their head in the sand. Barry Bonds is a cheating, LYING, *beep* and has ruined the game of baseball and his records do not count. Hank Aaron still is the all-time home run leader and Roger Maris is the single season leader to any baseball fan with a brain.

Your senseless ranting and whining would be taken more seriously if you bothered to spell the person's name correctly. I am deeply troubled by the world of ignorant baseball fan and non fans. The name is "Mark McGwire", not Mark McGuire nor Marc McGuire. Not spelling a person's name whom one is criticizing shows extremely poor use of intelligence. I can understand why the world hates the Bash Brothers. I can even understand that the world hates steroid use in baseball..though it was not illegal when it was used in the time Canseco claims it was used. McGwire never used steroids nor has he admitted to it. He did use something called Androstenedione. If you do not believe me then lookup on the internet. I am always amazed at how loud buffoons like you are criticizing individuals without being informed and knowing all the facts. Roger Maris should not be the homerun king either. He cheated too. Look it up. Babe Ruth all the waaaaaaay baaaaby!

That is misleading at best.

As noted earlier in this thread, steroids were not specifically barred by MLB at that time. However, they were prescription drugs, just as they are now. So their misuse by athletes to enhance performance was, in fact, illegal.

Thank God we have Ridley Scott to tell us what to think!

Even though Maris does have the record, he shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame either. He only played twelve seasons, had an antagonistic relationship with the media, and hit only .260 for his career.

Maris wasn't a media suck-up. True. In my opinion, along with honest achievement the thing that should count the most when being inducted into the Hall of Fame should be character. Maris broke Babe Ruth's home run record and he didn't cheat. Maris deserves to be in the Hall of Fame especally since he was denied full credit for the record with that stupid asterisk for so long. Why? Because the Commish was the Babe's best bud? Character matters. Maris had it. McGuire didn't.

reply

If character should count the most, then Speaker, Hornsby, Cobb, and even the Babe wouldn't be in, among numerous others. It's what you do on the field that counts. For all of Bonds' flaws, I would vote for him because he did it on the field. McGwire (with a W, not a U) only had his homers to count on. If he hadn't hit 583 home runs, his name wouldn't even be in the discussion. I wouldn't vote for McGwire because he was one-dimensional. He either hit a home run or did nothing. In short, home runs aside, he wasn't good enough. He was a rich man's version of Dave Kingman.

Maris didn't cheat, but he had two great years, 1960 and 1961, and then was average for the rest of his career. Two great years isn't enough.

Maris made baseball history. That should be enough. Isn't that the point of a "Hall of Fame?

reply

So did Chief Wilson, but he'll never get in either.
