They could've added an exchange about the absence of a shower cap without losing momentum or credibility (it's exactly the sort of thing Elle would've noticed in the reports)
But I agree it wouldn't have been necessary. Chutney already knew she was guilty, and when she realized her shower story wasn't credible, she started breaking down. No need to have her invent a shower cap just to have Elle shoot it down.
It does call to mind the famous Lincoln cross-examination, where a witness (who was actually the murderer) claimed he could see at night, after Lincoln confirmed he had no candle, because of the full moon. Without missing a beat, Lincoln whipped out an almanac with a blue cover and asked the witness why the almanac would say there was no moon that night.
Witness cracked, like Chutney, and confessed, like Chutney.
Even though the almanac for that year had a red cover.
