His cheap, pathetic excuse in breaking up with her [after 3 or 4 years], to be with a Jackie [Vivian] instead of a Marilyn (to ace his law career) pretty much spelled out his whole character. That, alongside his ad-nausea, condescending 'Pooh-bear' jive (which ironically he also used on Vivian).
