Movie Connection -- Scorsese's 'King of Comedy'?

Just caught STORYTELLING on cable and found it very worthwhile. (Hard to use the word "enjoyed" in regard to Solonz's stuff, but it was definitely worth my time.)

Anyway I thought I caught an interesting movie reference Solondz included, but I haven't seen it cited here on the imdb board or elsewhere.

When Scooby imagines himself sidekicking to Conan O'Brien, he's shown wearing a t-shirt with a cartoon graphic of a man's face on it. The man has dark hair parted on the side, large sunglasses, and a mustache.

It seemed to me the man looked very much like the main character Rupert Pupkin from Scorsese's great film on celebrity, THE KING OF COMEDY. It's a neat reference because KOC is about an undertalented man who feels he deserves fame on his own late-night talk show and will go to amazing lengths to grab it. The reference fits perfectly with the underachieving Scooby who has vague dreams of success as a late-night talkshow host. The reference to Pupkin tweaks Scooby's dream and indicates Solondz may feel that Scooby's motives are to be questioned by the audience, rather than embraced as entirely worthy.

Anyway this whole little observation may come off as smarty-pants, but I don't mean it to. KING OF COMEDY is a great movie and if Solondz is dropping a ref there, good on him. I'm curious to hear what others here think.

That t-shirt is a picture of Tony Clifton, who is Any Kaufman's alter ego.
