the son
did he REALLY have mind controlling powers or no? or did John Goodman just REALLY feel like catering to his son for that long?

Goodman's character was really hypnotised. The son had the ability to hypnotise him, he didn’t have mind controlling powers.

hmm...that kind of takes it out of the world of reality for me then. it would have seemed more realistic if the son didnt have hypnosis ability.

maybe it isn't totally realistic, but i think it's a joke on us by solondz. we're in the "non-fiction" portion of the film and a lot of surreal and improbable events are taking place.
-brady in a fatal coma from high school football
-scooby getting into princeton
-consuelo deciding to murder the entire family
the hypnosis is just a humorous pull into the surreal. there's a lot of forshadowing about it, like in the beginning when he's practicing on the cat in front end of one of the shots, and then he keeps asking to hypnotise his family repeatedly through the story. we're at a point in the story where everyone is at their wits ends, and just the smallest thing could tip them over.
sure, it would be more realistic if the hypnosis didn't work, but come on, this is a todd solondz movie. there's nothing this man doesn't do on purpose
very true. i shall except that answer! thanks for the insight.

I saw it as a comment on the Marty character and how pliable his mind was. He was a total sell-out.
