Very early 90s looking

Is it ever specified when the events in the film take place? The fashion, sets, even the general cinematography look so early nineties.

that's just how all of Todd Solondz movies look. They all look like they were made in the early 1990's or late 1980's. He defiantly has his own visual style.

It looks late nineties and 2001 still had a very late 90s look about it. I graduated high school in 2001 and remember the fashions and everything - it is very contemporary for its times. Look at the first American Pie.
