The documentary (spoiler)

When Scooby goes into the screening the audience laughter seems almost unreal. I didn't think the part they were showing justified fits of laughter from the audience, it was just Scooby saying what he wanted to do later in life.

Do you think he imagined it ?

It did seem surreal. It is unrealistic that an audience would respond in that fashion. This brings up more questions about fiction.

It was realistic. That is the kind of laughter heard in cinemas where Todd Solondz's films are shown.

I figured it as they were all snobs who thought Scooby was shallow and so "American teen" that they were laughing in superiority, also why the director didn't want Scooby to see it, because it was at his expense.

They were not laughing at his decision on what to do later in life, but thought he was not skilled enough to do it. I do agree, it was very surrealistic, but I do not think it was entirely malicious, though it did feel like a mob mentality. I think they knew Scooby would eventually see the documentary and were expecting he would better himself. Sad thing is however he felt very devastated that he has been made a laughingstock, with the laughter being as out of control as it was and the loud ongoing applause, which left me with a huh, though I do wonder what his reaction would have been if it was still an exploited farce, but they did not laugh, and to top that off, his family died. Way to drop a bridge on someone. Not only did he no longer have his family, but his dreams were ruined, and had no one to count on, sad just sad, no chance of redemption whatsoever. That is not how the film should have ended.

Additionally, the way I see it. They would have probably laughed at anyone who was dumb and did not take life seriously (for example education). They did laugh at his father as well, and probably the other people in his family, so it was not just Scooby. I do wish there was a good ending though, it just seemed too unpleasant for me to end that way. He was finally starting to come around and blam, he has become a farce. I do not know why everyone thought it was so funny to laugh at him like that, it was pretty cruel, but as I said, I doubt they did it out of true spite. Not having faith in someone is one thing, holding resentment to them is another. I hope this answers your question, and yes I know it's just a movie, but still, could have been done differently, but I guess it is just how the director makes his films, the dark side of humanity, but then tons of directors have dark sides of humanity in their films and shows.
