Actually, that's incorrect. Those were not the same guys.
Gertie was at Fred's house by the time Larry got home. Fred left on foot for the police station. Obviously, Gertie knew where he was headed and arrived after him. I'm guessing Fred felt remorseful after Larry's outburst (or maybe even before!) and gave Gertie the names.
It's not in the dialog, but it's the only explanation I can think of.
