And escape could have been easy for Edmond and the priest

All they had to do was not give their food bowl, then one of them had to lay on the floor pretending to be dead when the guard looks in, and the other hides out of site. When the guard comes in, they both jump him and either kock him out or kill him. Then they can try to get out.

Even if multiple guards came in, they had a chance of overpowering them, once the priest trained Edmond to fight. And they could probably take on any guard they encounter trying to leave.

True, I was thinking the same thing (I just rewatched this movie tonight, like my 30th time total watching it)

From what I could tell there were 3 guards and the warden. That warden sure did have a cool voice though

The warden was Michael Wincott. He's great. An underrated actor for sure.

Go watch him in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Crow, then watch Oliver Stone's Talk Radio to see a young Wincott play against type.

This is covered in the book. The abbe refuses to do violence to anyone, so they give up this idea.

reply

Edmond wanted to do something similar in the novel, the priest wouldn't do it.
