How did Clarion know that Edmond had the letter and what Edmond looked like? I mean it's not like Napoleon could just text Clarion and tell him "a guy is coming in on the Phareon named Edmond Dantes who has a letter you need to read, I am attaching a picture of what he looks like"

Of course if they stuck by the book this wouldn't have been a problem.

He could have sent out a messenger or messengers to relay this information. It's possible a messenger that he would've sent might've seemed more suspicious and therefore more likely to get caught with the letter.

I think you have a pretty good point though.
