"Do not commit the crime for which you now serve the sentence"

Why do you think the priest chose to warn Edmond of that in his dying moments?
I can understand him warning Edmond not to take revenge, or not to murder Mondego and Villefort, but warning him not to commit treason?
Why would he think Edmond would be a traitor to France (the crime Villefort had him jailed for)?
It just seems like an odd warning, considering he knew Edmond wanted revenge, not to betray France......

reply

That's a good question although bear in mind the Priest knew he wasn't really arrested for treason but merely that he had information so I don't think that's what the priest was getting meant.

Can you explain that? What do you think he was getting at?

reply

I think the poster below explained it as well as can be. I'm just saying the Priest knew he didn't commit treason so the warning must have been figurative rather than literal.

Hey! You're not old enough to drink! Now go and die for your country!!!

reply

I think the Priest was just warning him to not commit acts which would be as bad as what he was sentenced for. To not let him become an evil person like those that unjustly sent him away.

reply

i think he was warning edmond to not be so naive and trusting.
thats why he was in prison

reply

That's actually an interesting take on it, never considered that. Thanks for the input!

Actually, if you paid enough attention, Edmond Dantes was charged of high treason and murder. The second part was what Faria was referring to because he knew Edmond would use his freedom to exact revenge which ended with killing Fernand.

reply

Ah that's a very good point, murder was also a charge. Who was Edmond charged with murdering though, the ship captain?

reply

One of the guards that was escorting him to the docks, I believe.

reply

Villefort lied to Monsieur Morrell, Mercedes, Edmond's father, and Fernand when he threw in the murder charge. Even sleazy Fernand questioned that. Villefort said that when his men intercepted Edmond on his way to deliver the letter from Napolean, Edmond killed one of the guards. We know that isn't how Edmond came to be in custody. I think he added it to make Edmond's incarceration case stronger and more hopeless to his family and friends.

reply

ok wow i dont know how that escaped me. I've seen this movie a bunch of times (one of my favorites) but I dont know how i missed that one. Time for a re-watch!

reply

LOL!! Any excuse to re-watch is a good excuse. It's one of my favorites too. Well maybe my most favorite.

Also, I don't think we ever heard it said to Edmond. Probably cut during editing but perhaps we are to take it that Dorleac told him and Edmond shared it with Abbe Faria. It's probably an editing goof.
