How did Cyrus and Dennis trap the ghosts?

That's what I want to know.

So I take it some of these ghosts were wandering Earth for quite a while, given the Pilgrim woman. It would seem all of the ghosts except for the mother might have a reason to be unsettled spirits. But since Kalina mentioned that the fourth ghost (the mother) was from "six months ago at St. Luke's Hospital," that makes me think that somehow Cyrus and Dennis trapped her spirit while she was dying -- that they were there? I dunno.

That's exactly what it implied.

Exactly why Tony Shalhoub's character got so mad at Matthew Lillard's character when that was revealed - as without his help, it would not have been possible.

Lillard's character was a clairvoyant - in other words, he could see spirits and be aware of their presence.

Combine that ability (a spiritual compass if you will) with the glass cages that Kritikos had constructed, complete with 'power runes' written on the glass (if you're a linguist, it's very clear that all of the invocations in the movie as well as the spells etched into the glass surfaces are all in Latin) meant that they were equivalent to the 'ghost traps' used in Ghostbusters.

Kritikos used Lillard's character to help locate and trap the required ghosts, which were then stored down in the basement of the machine/mansion until the machinery released them in the particular order called for by the book.
