I can't believe nobody else thought this movie was incredibly boring?!

No, no, I'm not a "troll".
I give the film props for the simple fact that the writers totally nailed the characters. They were clearly trying to go for 'realistic', and with that they succeeded. But I feel that so many scenes in this movie were redundant and it just dragged on, and on, and on.
But ultimately, each and every one of these characters, minus the homicidal tendencies, are exactly like many of the kids I attended high school with. The way they carried themselves, their actions, and especially the way they all spoke is so dead on, (and I just graduated in 2013). I hated those kids, and sitting through a two hour film, listening to these actors whine and make themselves sound as intellectually impoverished as humanly possible was borderline torture.

If you're wondering why I subjected myself to such torture, it's because I study criminology and sociology and had a huge interest in the case, prior to watching the film.

But my question is, does the book contain as much mindless drivel as the film? In other words, will it make me want to bang my head against a wall every time someone opens their mouth? Or is it worth reading?

I've seen some people on this board mention the movie being boring. I'm sure that's subjective. I find it really fascinating and have seen it dozens of times, but some of my other favorite movies are about burnouts (Havoc, The Bling Ring, Alpha Dog, Wassup Rockers, Spring Breakers, etc.) and I've heard people complain that those are boring and vapid, too. I think I'm interested in those kind of stories because they're so unlike my life, but if you grew up around people like this and hated them I can see why you wouldn't get anything out of watching a movie about it.

I've heard good things about the book, but never read it myself. And I assume it's told through narration rather than dialog so there's probably not a ton of the characters having their empty conversations.

It may not have been boring but it definitely was excruciating to get through, because the acting was really bad. Or maybe it was the way the script was written but the characters seriously had no personality whatsoever. It's like oh here's another day, we're stoned again. Hey let's kill a guy! Then let's tell anyone in earshot what happened. It was like none of the characters were researched in the least and the laziest screenwriters they could find put together dialogue filled with stuff about boning, getting high, surfing and being nonchalant about wanting to kill someone. Oooh, that makes it sooo dark! 

I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.
