Yeah that game was such a ripoff of Mortal Kombat, it was eye-roll inducing to say the least. That move is even their own version of MK's babality.
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.
That was Mortal Kombat...
When this movie re-aired at a NYC film festival last year there was a "making of" documentary extra by Larry Clark who said that retaining the rights to MK was one of the most expensive parts of the production.
He did also say to your credit though that he did not want to explicitly feature one particular fighting game and single it out as there are many more from the tame Street Fighter series to the more gory Killer Instinct type series. So in that he changed the names of certain things.
It was also noted that Derek Dzvirko as well as the rest of those kids, including Kent and Puccio, would spend a lot of time playing games like Mortal Kombat. In Dzvirko's recently unsealed transcript for his first deal for which he was to testify and lead police to the body of Bobby Kent, that among other tactics were used as defense after he lied on the stand while under oath. He did however lead investigators to the remnants of Kents corpse.
This is one movie that I'll say is pretty good about sticking to what actually happened more than other "based on real events" movies that we seem to typically see. Trial transcripts and media footage as well as anything else you can find on this tragedy is pretty much exactly what is shown in this movie.
