When does this take place? In the film, Vianne is talking to the old man (forgot his name) saying that "the war" (WWII) ended 15 years ago. So I guess it takes place around 1960? (WWII ended in 1945) Also, the priest is singing Elvis and is chastised for it which was common back then.
I'm sure the book has more detail but it would make sense, considering all those lovely allusions to 1950's overconservatic sexual politics.

Actually, the novel and film are really different so you'll find that the novel takes place sometime in either the 1980's or 1990's (it doesn't specify when exactly).
