Singing hymns in the church?

In the opening scenes in the church they are singing a hymn. If its set in France wouldn't they probably be Catholic and therefore not sing hymns? I don't know much about it but I didn't think that Catholics sing hymns?

When I was a kid going to Catholic church, we sang hymns...

"David Warner, you are under arrest by order of David Warner!"

Catholics do sing hymns. They may not have done in the past, but they do now. My mum and dad sung when they were little in the 60s in England and they were Catholic. I am sure France would have probably been the same.

Roman Catholics have been encouraged to use all kinds of music in the liturgy of the Mass since the Second Vatican Council of 1962-65, whence came also the new Mass using the language of the people, etc. There have been issued several different hymnals and the music ranges from folk songs to New Age.
