Why did Vianne have so much trouble guessing Roux's favorite chocolate?
Hmmm?
shareto show that he was unpreditable and u cant judge someone from how they see things.
"I wash my hands of this wierdness" -Jack Sparrow
and to show that the two characters have so much in common, vivianne was such an unpredictable woman herself and when roux told her that she hadn't figured out his favorite, you see her intrest in him instantly piques.
"who are you?"
"...some girl"
Maybe she knew his favorite all along. By letting him think she had not guessed, she gave him a good reason to come back for more.
sharehey that's interesting too! at the end when roux tells her that she finally guessed right, she said she knew all along!

Smart woman cuz I would have done the same thing.

I always thought that he was the one person who threw her off her game--that he got to her and she wasn't able to guess until she had settled herself in. Something like that--nevertheless, it's fun to watch their dynamic (he'll get the squeak out of her door--best line!)
I know he'd get to me and I wouldn't be able to guess a thing about him!
"Get me a box of kittens--stat!"
"Something like that--nevertheless, it's fun to watch their dynamic"
It is hard to explain, but it is something like that IMO. The first selected might have truly been his favorite, I wouldn't have admitted to it either, if I wanted to make an impression, or keep her thinking a lot more about me/etc. One the other hand at the end, and together anything she selected or offered would be his favorite....
Or something like these....
"A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five."

That always makes me laugh! ...............fp share
I always thought your favorite chocolate reflected your personality, the type of person you were inside. Everytime Vianne thinks she has Roux's type pinned down, she offers him a chocolate, only to discover she got it wrong.
"You crazy witch!" Phoebe Halliwell, Charmed.
Dern right! I'd let Johnny Depp fix my squeaky door anyday. LOL :)
shareI was anticipating hearing a (very!) corny line during their night together, after a first kiss, like "THIS is my favorite flavor".. groan-
so was relieved when that did not happen.
my guess is that she had chosen A favorite of his each time.. but that the whole point of his (and her) character is that they never settled down- with homes. AND with other things.. like partners. and pleasures/chocolate---
but at the end, once he has decided he might like to stay- with her. with the town. in one place.. that then he's able to say what his favorite is..
and it's simple-but-not-so-simple, every morning, nothing exotic.. hot chocolate.
?
a guess. just a subjective guess.
I think the film makers allows you to imterept it in whatever way you feel is right. My view is that Vianne was the type of person who thought she had seen it all, remember she's travelled a lot, I assume that she could guess everybody else's favorite chocolate because they were frankly slightly predicatable or because she had met people who had similar personalites to them. Suddenly Roux comes along and he's unlike anyone who she's met before, he's a free spirit like herself so naturally she was a bit thrown by him and his taste. When she finally gets his favourite flavour its a sign that she's figured him out and in donig so has figured herself out, i think by having hot chocolate as Roux's favourite shows that he's the type who wants to settle down and experience more homely simple way fo life cause all the other people's favourite choclate's were exotic like the pepper triangle Roux's was simple.

I assumed it was also to do with the thing on the counter that she spun and asked the customers what they saw. Their answers revealed something about their personalities, and their personalities gave her an insight into the chocolate preferences. Just a thought?
Love is never having to say you're sober.
Because he likes to keep her guessing. They are both free spirits, and playful.
shareI love and understand all of these answers but mine was much more simple. I just thought Roux wanted to sample as many of her chocolates as possible, so didn't settle on any particular one.
shareIt's wonderful to see that everyone has a different answer, that's the beauty of movies!
I thought that, the same way he didn't want to admit he'd stay and change his life for her, he didn't want to admit she had probably guessed.
Or...they were just playing the old game of love and flirtation!
what chickflick2000 said. i didn't think it could be anything else until i saw so many different interpretations on here which really makes me think about it
