Iknow it is supposed to be about her kindness and wanting to share with others, but i still think its funny lol...especially since almost the whole town still hated her(till the end)....

It is like the Asian women at the food court in every mall... giving away chunx of chicken on toothpicks... all to get you to buy their food instead of the flamers burger you really wanted.

Exactly - she knows the powers her chocolate has, and that people will come back for more once they've had a taste.
Look at the woman and her husband who want the "stimulating" beans...the first pack is free, and she comes back twice, the second time with her husband, to buy more. You don't see them pay, but it's implied. That same woman tells the priest how good the chocolate is - she's buying more than beans from the shop.
Armande comes in regularly and most likely pays for her hot chocolate and cake. The kindly old gentleman comes back to buy dog biscuits for Charlie (and seashells for Leslie Caron).
Just because you don't hear a cash register clanging doesn't mean that the people aren't paying...

Just noticed, the husband and wife are seen to be paying when they come back to more. They hand over money and then she hands over the bags. (47:34) minutes into it)

PLUS.... the man & woman, are SO MUCH happier when they come in together, aren't they?

Actually a small truck srrived a day or so after she did containing the rest of her stuff.
I had wondered the same thing the first time I watched the movie, but the book mentioned how her belongings couldn't be delivered for a few days. Second time around I paid closer attention.

heheh boondock... the thread was supposed to be silly and a joke lol, yes i got the movie, i love the movie and have seen it a few times.... I just thought it was funny how she kept giving away the chock for free... I know she was 'giving it away'[ to lure and entice customers, its just that even after she has done her luring, i still dont remember anyone really buying any chockys from her ... anyway no biggie~!! its a great movie though

Maybe Vianne is giving away chocolates for free in order to show that in a not so distant past some people loved to share and to make other people happy whenever they could? In this uber-materialistic times we cannot understand people like her, apparently.
That or she was trying to turn "chocaholics" the entire town's population!

In the movie, chocolate symbolizes grace - which is freely given and when understood (or ingested) sets people free.
It's contrasted side by side with the religion of the town which is used to try to control people (mainly just controlling their behavior.)
Grace vs. religion.

So of course its free.

In a way, this demonstrates the cleverness of taste testing. If they have just a nip of something that tickles their taste-buds, it is likely that they'll continue to come back and purchase their "favorite" until they become regulars, as most of Vianne's customers were.
