I'd cast
Character, (actual actor in movie), actor in 50s version in my scenario

Vienne (Juliette Binoache) Julie Andrews, which would make it pre-Poppins as a film debut.

Count or Conte or whomever (Alfed Molina) Billy De Wolfe, whose prissy mannerisms and fey fussin g would have done this role well.

The boy's mother (Carrie-Anne Moss) Leslie Caron, who DOES actually appear in the film briefly.

his grandmother and her mother (Dame Judi Dench) Zsa Zsa Gabor!!

Roux the River Rat (Johnny Depp) DEAN MARTIN!!! Good ol' Dino..

I don't think that image-conscious Zsa Zsa Gabor would have liked to have been compared with Judi Dench's playing of the grandmother character even now. Perhaps now that Zsa Zsa is 99 she might relent.
