Pointless Character Inclusion

Did anyone else immmediately find the inclusion of the character played by Johnny Deep just completely pointless?
It's like they were so desperate to give the main woman a love interest, that they didn't even bother to really give him any depth or convincibility of character.
The movie could've been still just as fabulous without him.

His character appears very heavily in the book, although he's not Irish in it

That's interesting because although the promotional material features him heavily, his character would barely feature in much more than a quarter of this film. I tend to agree with the OP to a certain extent. There didn't seem to be a huge amount of chemistry between the 2 characters.

I thought he was there to make the point that in 1959/60 France, chocolate was more controversial than ponytails on men.

Your just talking gibberish.

Illiteracy rears it's ugly head.
