If fate brings people together, then why did they have to wait years?

I don't know if I believe in fate or not. I think it's possible for fate exist, but I'm not sure if it really does exist. Anyway, if fate is what brought Jonathan and Sara together in the first place, then why did they have to wait several years to be together? Why didn't fate bring them together when they were both ready to be together? What was the whole purpose of them running into each other one day and then having to wait several years to be together?

The point was to show them each other, to show them that one day they were meant to be together. The entire idea is that fate showed them to one another. But it's like Sara said, that fate gives us signs. She thought that since he didn't show up on her floor at the beginning of the movie that they weren't meant to be together. But she didn't wait long enough. She misinterpreted the sign, because he did show up on her floor just a little late. So instead they had to wait seven years before they start to figure out the signs again. Fate isn't controlling everything, it's just shows us what could be. How we interpret the signs is what makes up the world.

I thought the reason why they couldn't be together right then and there was for the sole purpose of showing Jeremy Piven's character what he has to do to get his wife back.

Maybe the first time they met was just to let eachother know of the others existance. They didn't stay together then because they weren't suppose to be together yet. She had a boyfriend and he had a girlfriend.
