for anyone who has been to serendipity, how expensive is the frozen hot chocolate? I'm planning a trip to NYC this summer and i was hoping to stop in at serendipity, i know the wait is long, but i really want to try the frozen hot chocolate. is it worth it?
I live a half hour out of NYC, so I went to Serendipity3 a few years ago, and I must say, it is absolutely delicious! It REALLY tastes like hot chocolate cold haha not like a chocolate iced drink...it's a bit hard to describe. Several of the cafe's in my area have tried to replicate it, and while the one in my town is pretty comparable, Serendipity3's is still the best! I went to Serendipity3's website, and according to it, a Frrrozen Hot Chocolate drink is $8.50, and it's big enough for two to split. There are a bunch of varieties of it as well, but I stuck with the classic. If you are afraid that waiting in line will take too long, I'd suggest making a reservation, I've heard that they would actually prefer it. The telephone number is 212-838-3531, and their address is 225 East 60th Street on the Upper East Side. Not to far away from Serendipity at 1011 Third Ave is Dylan's Candy Bar, a candy store owned by Ralph Lauren's daughter Dylan. If you have some time, it's a nice store to visit as well. Have a wonderful trip!
I was actually in Serendipity last week twice. They currently have a book for sale at the cash register called "Sweet Serendipity" that has the recipe for the frozen hot chocolate inside. I can't wait to try and make it!
they sell two Serendipity cookbooks at Barnes & Noble...from what I've heard, the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate does come out the same. You can also order the mix packets from Serendipity online so you can make your own!
I was just there last Wednesday and we had a 45 minute wait but it was so worth it! Didn't get the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate but I wish I would've. Instead I got a sundae and it was so huge! Read the menu thoroughly, there's a bunch of interesting things on there. Like a $1000 dessert that requires 48 hours advance notice. Have fun!!
Serendipity is a wonderful little restaurant and worth whatever wait you encounter. We went to Serendipity in November 2005, my now husband proposed to me there. Its a long story but it all started with a relationship beginning somewhat like in the movie (met while involved, it wasnt the right time, fate took its course) and was two more years of Serendipity related gifts. He gave me black cashmere gloves from Bloomingdales for one christmas and the book Love in the Time of Cholera for Valentines Day. I got him a script of the movie. My engagement ring is from a Serendipity collection from Tacori.
Anyway, its a GREAT little restaurant. We didnt make reservations and we had to wait three hours for a table. It was WELL worth it of course - the frozzen hot chocolate is fantastic. The food was great and the decor wonderful. No trip to NYC is complete without visiting.
Lovely story Melyssa, there's lots of romance in your marriage and I haven't stopped smiling since I read about you and your husband!
I actually didn't much like the movie "Serendipity" back when it came out and am about to see it again now, but I LOVE the restaurant. Anyone complaining about the prices has to remember that they're in NY, one of the most expensive cities in the world. If you visit here, do your homework, save up for the pricey places and search out the cheap great ones. It's what the locals do and you'll have a blast.

I just returned from my trip to New York City and we went to Serendipity's. I had a great time there, even though it was cramped. The frozen hot chocolate was really good, and since we made reservations i didn't have to deal with the wait.
I went to Serendipity like 3 weeks ago with my friend. I was actually quite disappointed. The frozen hot chocolate was okay, but not that special. Just a regular chocolate drink. My friend ordered a menu called Strawberry Supreme. Nothing supreme about that. The menu was under a category called Iced Drinks, but it was actually a cup filled with strawberries and cream..it wasn't even a drink at all. Not iced either. It was a hot day, we went in for delicious refreshments, but ended up disappointed and our throats were filled with cream. Don't get your hopes up too much.
When I went there a few years back, we were seated at a table that was right across from the table where the characters sat in the movie. At that table, there was a couple, presumably on a date. Things didn't seem to turn out as well for them, however. We noticed that the woman left for the bathroom while the guy waited, but she was gone for an extra long while. It was obvious the guy was waiting for her, but eventually he paid the bill and left quite upset. Then we noticed that the women took her purse and coat with her, so it seems like she pulled the ol' "fake trip to the bathroom and leave the guy" trick to get out of the date. That must have sucked.
it's fun to try their hot chocolate once, but if you go on a weekend, be prepared to wait 3 hours.
Oh, you can also make your own at home by blending together half a try of ice cubes, two large spoons of hot chocolate powder, and 1 cup of milk. tastes almost identical.
to make the frozen hot chocolate you need to melt down hersheys chocolate bars (dark and milk chocolate), and fix all the ingredients in quite a particular way; if you make it with just powder it tastes like crap. the recipe in the book is right on. delicious.
Ok I have an update for how to make frozen hot chocolate. What it actually is, is ice, milk, chocolate syrup, and 2 scoops of Cappuccine brand vanilla powder. I believe you can use any brand of vanilla smoothie base and the results should be similar. but this powder is what gives the drink a thickness like a milkshake. I guess there's actually no hot chocolate powder in it.
I went to Serendipity last Sunday morning (April 13) around 11:30 am and there was no wait. When we left, there was a short wait, but not 3 hours like I have heard. It was busy, but not chaotic, don't know about midnight though, could be busy with couples on dates. The frozen hot chocolate would definitely be worth the wait. The decor is fun, very eclectic, we sat at the table just behind the one where John & Sarah sat. Have fun, we did!
i definately suggest that if anyone goes, they go early. we went at noon on a week day and there was no wait and there were 6 of us. we too sat just behind where the characters sat in the movie. cool place, good food, good frozen hot chocolate.
I work at a little coffee shop and we make frozen hot chocolates that are delicious. I'd still like to check out Serendipity 3 someday, though, just for the atmosphere.
Last thing I heard about Serendipity, it got shut down for health violations, although I'm sure it's open now. They also have a $25,000 sundae which has a diamond ring in the bottom. They do not take reservations for dessert-only - you must order a meal. The food IMO is not good at all, but dessert is heavenly.
