The ending bothered me.

Johnathon was laying down in the middle of the skating rink. It was dark and snowy, so how could Sarah recognize him, and throw her glove on his lap? Especially since she had a vague memory of what he looked like 7 years ago?

I know this movie is totally unreal, but they could've done a better job with the ending.

Also, I wish they had told each other they had picked number 23 in the elevator.

I thought of it as the glove slipped away from her and she was trying to catch it and noticed it landed on a guy... who just happened to be John!

reply

I never thought of it like that!
I think you're probably right, which makes it better. :)

"I thought of it as the glove slipped away from her and she was trying to catch it and noticed it landed on a guy... who just happened to be John!"

That would have been a much smarter ending - and no extra expense.

reply

Actually they shot this scene but was cut in the final edit :) to preserve the final length of the movie...........They believed that viwers we re smart enuff to understand that :)

reply

it couldnt have slipped, as she was staning at least 20 feet away.
hre friend told her to just be, and then said "its getting cold" and she ended up at the ice rink and there was only one other person there. she was feelign greta because she'd found his address and knew he'd just called off his own wedding - it was only cusack who was still unaware she was nearby. so when she got there and theres one guy lying on the ice lookign at the sky (cassiopeia, even though he couldnt see it in the snow) and her own instincts had broght her there, she knew it was him. of course it was him.

These posts amuse me greatly.

She went back to the skating rink because she had left her jacket there...he had found her jacket on the benches and was holding it as he was lying on the ground, looking up at the sky

reply

He was the only person there.

She had given up hope.

Use your brain, its pretty damn obvious.

Don't dis Serendipity. It's a wonderful fairytale.

I was at the actual Serendipity in April. It's exactly the same as in the film and well worth a visit - the meatloaf is wonderful. Hehe.

reply

That's cool about going there! I like the word Serendipity. It has such a nice touch to it.

I think they should have told each other they picked the number 23 too! That little boy Josh in the elevator cracked me up; he was such a brat. hahah

I could tell by the look in his eyes that maybe I'm just another one of his lies

reply

He also had the other glove lying right next to him. She would have seen that, deinatley.

reply

That bugged me too. It couldn't have slipped away and blew into his lap because there was very little wind.

My guess is that she just kinda knew, and then threw the glove as hard as she could. She must have a really good arm.

It's a movie. In movies, you HAVE to suspend belief. "Serendipity" is one of my favorite movies. I can stare into Kate Beckinsale's face, ALL DAY!

"You want the truth? You can't HANDLE the truth!" Jack Nicholson, "A Few Good Men."

reply

i laughed when she was 40 feet away from him when the glove landed, that's some sweet aim. but i mean, the movie is touching and cool so i don't mind

In the director's commentary, the director talks about this and other implausibilities in the scene in question. I can't remember exactly what he refers to, but he goes through a string of things like, "Could she really throw the glove that far an have it land on him? Noooooo. Would he really be able to lie there that long in the centre of the rink? Nooooo. But it's a movie."

I kinda like that. The director was willing to throw implausibilities into things for the sake of a good scene.

And considering that the movie is full of wild coincidences and implausibilities anyway, it's not out of place.

It's a contemporary fairytale. You've gotta just go with it.

reply

It was enjoyable because he knew how far he could stretch it while still keeping the film in the realm of "real".

Had to laugh at this quote. I've actually laid down on an ice rink for an hour plus. Then again, I'd been doing triple jumps for a few hours and when I fell was just too tired to get up. Almost fell asleep too!

Hm, it was what came further in the ending that bothered me. Back in the store by the gloves, Sara asks when Jon became such a hopeless romantic, and he says something to the effect of, "Oh, I dunno. I just think it's good luck." Someone please tell me he's being facetious? After all that happened, after the "obituary," the character still believes in plain luck and not destiny? It doesn't fit well with the movie's world unless he's just making a joke. Gah!

reply

I took it as him being facetious. Hope this makes you feel better....lol.

well it's no mystery why she was at the icerink, when her friend told her to put a jacket on, she remembered she had left it on the bench at the ice rink when she was there with Lars. The glove landing on him bit... was a scream, I thought. It lands from above as we see in slow motion, not from the side, and considering she was so far away from where he was lying, if she had flung it at him, the reality is it probably would have taken his eye out with the force, which alway makes me laugh so much when I imagine her doing that.

However, putting ALL of that aside... I LOVE this movie... just warms my heart even time I look at it. My favourite moment in the movie is when Halley gives Jonathan the book, and just the look on his face the second before he opens it. Magic.

reply

She was tempting fate one last time. If she couldn't throw the glove that far; if the glove didn't land on him if it did; if he didn't notice the glove if it landed on him; if he didn't turn around after picking up the glove; maybe, just maybe, she hoped they should be together. Just a thought.

I don't know what is wrong with the world - but I know how to fix it.

reply

And then, and then, if he hadn't have breathed in and then he turned blue and died and fell lengthwise on the ice, and...

I wish she had told him that she wasn't the girl he saw in her house!! (of course, he'd had to ask first)
