I think they wanted to set up a sequel. While I smile at the last scene with some of the lines I will say this that fountain scene ending would have worked for me as well. I truly believe the fountain scene was one of the most wonderful sequences in movie history. It will go down as one of the best ever in my opinion. The way they give Carl Reiner his moment at the end there is truly a tip of the cap to all he has achieved in Hollywood as a director, actor and comedian. I want to stand up and clap when Elliott Gould nods at Matt Damon who then let's Carl have his moment (sort of like, kid, you are a star but take it from an old timer like me, that man next to you is a legend, let him have his moment). Carl has been in show business since the early 50's and maybe even earlier then that and he was given a well deserved moment in that fountain scene. I also find it neat that Brad Pitt is the first to leave. It is kind of like saying yeah maybe I am the biggest star here but these other fellows need to get some credit, so I will let them each get their moment and one by one they leave after him each getting a little moment after Brad's screen time up until that point had ended. The scene is very well done and I can watch it a million times and love it every time.
