Should have ended at the fountain

In my opinion we didn't need the "Three to six months later" segment, even though it does have some great lines. If the film ended directly following the Claire de Lune finale at the fountain, it would have been a masterpiece. But, the ending scene at the prison just took away from it. I like to turn the movie off as soon as the film fades to black after the fountain scene. I think that is a perfect ending for the film. Anyone agree?

Yes.

Absolutely yes, OP.

It's funny, I remember thinking the same exact thing when I first saw this years ago. That is definitely a much better ending scene. I think they added that last segment because pitt, clooney and roberts weren't in the fountain scene.

Seems to me like it would have been better for an after the credits scene. That gives the audience a chance to either stick around, or just ignore it.

Brad Pitt was in the fountain scene. George Clooney and Julia Roberts weren't.

Pitt was in the fountain scene, he was the 1st one to walk away.

Man, did you hit the nail on the cranium with that comment. I never thought about it till you said it. You are soooo right. Claire de Lune to fade . . . .

Thanks for the observation.

OP, yes.

Yeah it would be cool, but it would be a kinda awkward ending for Danny and Tess.

reply

No, it would have been a weird ending for George Clooney's character.

umm, we all knew from the scene when Danny is going to be put in the cop car that he would be out in 3-6 months and that Tess would get back with him since she said "that's my husband". so we really didn't need to see that final scene at the prison unless it was just to show that Benedict was following Danny's movements.

I also agree that it should have been after the credits, because it still needs to be there in some form. You're right in that we do know he will be out in 3-6 months, but there is still something inherently missing when the main character is completely left out of the ending. We know he gets out soon and we know Tess is waiting for him, but it just seems like one of those things that still needs to be shown to properly end the movie, so that there is no room for doubt. It seals it in and gives the main character a proper send off, as he rides off into the horizon with his woman.

Another reason is works so well is it bookends the movie, in that it begins and ends with Danny just coming out of jail.

A lot of things can happen 3 to 6 months in jail. Also I think it's far more important to show that it aint over for them. I don't think the movie can end well on the fountain unless Danny was there as well. Even then I think a little "What did we learn?" needs to be there.

reply

I agree acompletely. The fountain would been a much better ending indeed. And I don't think that it would be weird for Danny and tess at all.

reply

I see your point, but I still really like that last scene, so I'll go with werwagtgewinn that it should have been after the credits.

I think they wanted to set up a sequel. While I smile at the last scene with some of the lines I will say this that fountain scene ending would have worked for me as well. I truly believe the fountain scene was one of the most wonderful sequences in movie history. It will go down as one of the best ever in my opinion. The way they give Carl Reiner his moment at the end there is truly a tip of the cap to all he has achieved in Hollywood as a director, actor and comedian. I want to stand up and clap when Elliott Gould nods at Matt Damon who then let's Carl have his moment (sort of like, kid, you are a star but take it from an old timer like me, that man next to you is a legend, let him have his moment). Carl has been in show business since the early 50's and maybe even earlier then that and he was given a well deserved moment in that fountain scene. I also find it neat that Brad Pitt is the first to leave. It is kind of like saying yeah maybe I am the biggest star here but these other fellows need to get some credit, so I will let them each get their moment and one by one they leave after him each getting a little moment after Brad's screen time up until that point had ended. The scene is very well done and I can watch it a million times and love it every time.
