Why does Reuben wear such big glasses in these movies?

Am I missing something regarding these huge oversized glasses - is it some kind of inside joke that I'm not getting?

I was wondering this too, but not only in this movie. I am from Europe and I noticed in American movies rather old men are often wearing these huge ass glasses and often in combination with a red or colourful bow tie. What's the deal with that?

it's a nod to the 70's, people wore those huge glasses

Like Robert Evans the famous producer

Just a stylistic choice. the music, too, had a 70s feel

that is just the style..... We used to really wear some crazy things in the seventies..... Its like a throwback to the disco era :)
