Perfect casting except for...

Julia Roberts. I just can't stand her. I have never liked her acting style. And she is one of the most self absorbed people in Hollywood. And that is saying something considering that Hollywood is filled with people like that.

reply

yeah im not a fan.

reply

Her part was so small, it didn't matter who played it.

It mattered. I would have preferred a better actress. She was flat and boring as hell. And Julia Roberts is GREAT in some roles, but she fell flat in this movie.

I had a feeling you were going to say Julia's name before even clicking on this thread, lol. But while I do agree that she was nothing special, let's also be honest here: her star power was the reason she was cast. And in theory, it adds to the appeal of this all-star ensemble piece.

reply

Oh, I agree her star power is the reason she was cast, I would just rather they get another actress that had some star power.

Cate Blanchett
Renée Zellweger
Robin Wright
Nicole Kidman
Halle Berry
Charlize Theron
Angela Bassett

Any of these ladies would have been much preferable and, IMO, are better actresses and have just as much star power.

I agree, there's just something about her that makes me dislike her.

Break the rules and in a couple of years you will have a hell of a story to tell.

Success?

Charlize would have been great. She was very relevant then and a big enough star where she fits with the cast but not to much to be a distraction(because of her minor role)also beautiful and smart enough to drive danny's motive. I would have liked Halle as well but because I don't think she would have meshed well with the cast it would be for much more personal reasons. They would have saved a penny or two with some of the women from your list.

reply

I didn't mind JR in this. I really liked her more in 12.
I would have cast Sandra Bullock instead.

Mick LaSalle, SF Chronicle:

In an example of casting clout gone awry, Soderbergh casts Julia Roberts as Tess, who tanks every scene she's in with her sour, self-righteous performance. The good news is that she's not in many scenes. Yet the question lingers throughout: Why would a guy who looks like Clooney risk anything to get back a nasty, unpleasant wife?

And one could add: not that great looking either.

For it to be plausible, you'd probably need an actress different from Roberts, but you'd also need a differently scripted Benedict (whether or not played by Garcia) so Tess doesn't seem like just some tramp homing in on the nearest convenient zillionaire.

I think Jennifer Lopez would've been a better choice. She was one of the hottest women on the planet back then, and she had great chemistry with Clooney in Out of Sight (which Soderbergh also directed).

reply

Roberts was out of her league in this movie (and usually is except for Erin Brockovich). She was supposed to look beautiful descending the stairs (in slow motion for godsakes), but she walks like a duck. It's not sellable that she's Clooney's object of affection. Matt Damon's maybe...

reply

Hahahaha. Like a duck. That is exactly what I thought too!

reply

Agreed about chemistry between Clooney and Lopez. "Out of Sight" was a good movie, and they were great onscreen together. Lopez seems to do better in dramatic roles than some of the comedies she has done.

reply

Yes, it annoyed me a bit, a mainstream actress which was there mostly to fit that extra piece of budget gross ...
