Somebody Please Explain...

During the scene when Matt Damon pretends to be from Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) and talks with Andy Garcia & Bernie Mac, suddenly Bernie Mac rushes to attack Matt Damon when he (Damon) used the word "colored". Just then Matt Damon picks something from Andy Garcia's Coat very quickly. After that very scene, Brad Pitt looking at the screen confirms that "He's got it". Can anybody pls answer, what did Damon steal from Garcia's Coat pocket and WHY?

reply

The codes to some of the security systems for the vault.

reply

He stole the day's security codes for access purposes.

reply

You really didn't pay much attention to this movie. Go back and watch it again. Terry had the codes in his folder, and when he started to not trust Linus he put them in his jacket. Frank then rushed Linus which gave the distraction for Linus to pick the codes from his jacket.

reply

Yeah i must agree with the people who posted before me. If you didnt understand that..then you missed a very large portion of the movie and you need to go watch it again.

reply

Maybe you should consider that movie viewers in these times are not that bright. I find myself explaining movies to folks on this site all the tine.

reply

Ditto to those who have responded prior to me.

I wish they had handled this little detail a little better, though. There are many lines of dialogue referencing the vault codes (changed every 12 hours, handed off to Benedict when he arrive as the casino each day, etc.)and then there is the scene of Linus lifting them from Benedict in the staged argument scene. Then they go straight to blowing the vault doors..... Should have slipped in a 10 second clip showing Linus and Danny using to codes to open an outter vault door or something to round out that plot line.

Whatever doesn't kill me only makes me stronger. How strong are you?

reply

OP - watch the movie TWO more times due to your ultra lame post.

Also -

Cleverfox - we do see Linus typing in the codes but it's very quick - soon after that, Danny catches up with him via the top of the elevator when he takes Linus by surprise. But I see what you mean -- more of that is what you are saying.

@Kotter7579 you are a uber lame troller and you have super lame name!

I'm glad I saw this post and it's answers! This was exactly what I was looking for! The first time I saw the movie, I was thinking all the time that "HOW did Linus get the security code for the elevator which changed every 12 hours?!"
I hadn't noticed the pickpocketing scene. I saw it again and once again, I didn't notice it!! So I thought maybe I can find the answer in imdb. It's funny that I found my answer in a post where the subject is the exact opposite of mine; I knew the reason but missed the scene, while ravi-slimshady noticed the scene but missed the point :D

reply

The only reason Bernie Mac's character is on the team is so that he can get mad at Matt Damon's racist comment and pretend to attack him. That's it.

reply

Maybe.

reply

Okay I've watched this movie like eight times in my life and maybe I just leave whenever this scene is on, but I never ever noticed or saw that. Maybe because there is just so much going on. I thought for some odd reason, they got into the vault with the securities hand print identification. That's what I've been thinking, but this is much more logical.

On a scale from 1 to Lord Voldemort, how awkward are your hugs?

reply

This post is ancient but just wanted to point out that, as an employee of the casino, Bernie Mac's character also collected information about other employees in the breakroom, which allowed Ocean to get his IT guy in there.

reply

Movie Buff beat me to this point, but I would also like to add that he also got his hands on the plans for the casino, the elevator shaft, and the vault. That was explained the first time everyone got together. This, as well as the intel, is why they needed a man on the inside.

Going back to the OP, as the idea was to fabricate a plausible scuffle to distract Benedict, it seems to me that use of the word 'colored' was not terrifically offensive and use of the word 'n*gg*r' would in context have been a better choice for Linus. The important thing was to make Mac's reaction as plausible as possible. However, it might have been felt by the film makers that this wasn't a Tarantino film, etc.

"I beseech ye in the bowels of Christ, think that ye may be mistaken."

reply

Saying the word colored would've worked a hell,of a lot better than Linus saying n!gg#r. For a young professional of the Nevada gaming commission, it would have been wayyy out of character for someone to instinctively go for the N bomb. The word colored slipping out would've been a little more believable for the fake gaming rep, and a lot easier for a Terry to handle Bernie. If Linus drops n!gg¥r on Bernie, a more predictable response would've been an irate Bernie overpowering Linus, no matter how Terry responded

reply

Bernie Mac also negotiated getting the van needed for posing as a Swat team

reply

Actually...

Blacks have not been "colored" for (like) 40 years. So, referring to a Black person as "colored" could be viewed as an old-school insult. It would seem less "respectful" than changing with the times.

This would be especially offensive coming from someone who is under 60 and never had to re-learn how Blacks care to be viewed (as it relates to "colored").

Coming from someone of Linus' age, it would seem to be an intentional slight OR... This is the way he regularly speaks of Blacks. Neither would be deemed "okay."

What about Ocean promising that the 150+M will be split evenly, 11 ways, but then he trades half of the total to get Tess back?
And, did they leave half of the loot in the vault as part of the deal with Terry? or was that part of the total scam? it's a bit hard to follow even after repeated watching. As if it mattered? Just enjoy.

...it's a whole lot harder to shine, than undermine.

reply

That was part of the scam. They figured Benedict would attempt to catch them, and they had to get away scot-free. That's why they held half the "money" hostage to get their "SWAT Team" down to the vault and past all of the security.

He really wasn't going to give Benedict half of the money. He just got Benedict to prove the money was more important than his wife.

It was the dry cleaning tag...Andy forgot to remove it before shooting began and Matt, always the professional, got it before anyone else noticed it...saving the shot and not wasting film or re-shoot time!

The validity of my answers is highly dependent on the intelligence of the question..or lack thereof.
