I'm rewatching the season 4 episode when Jess returns and Rory's high pitched 'it's my town' is so annoying, partly because it doesn't make sense. Yes, Jess, grew up in New York and hated Stars Hollow, but his mother was born and bred in Stars Hollow way long before either of the Gilmore women came around. He has just as much connection to the town as she does. Infantile. I swear Rory acts like she's six sometimes.
shareI don't think it is about ancestry connections, it is more of a "one of us" mentality. I think Jess would have been an outsider even if he was born and raised in stars hollow, he is an outcast wherever he goes, at least the young Jess.
Luke is a hardcore townie with deep roots in community and Jess is his nephew, that along should have given Jess the membership, still nobody regarded him as part of town.

Basically Dean considers Stars Hollow his town too even though he came from Chicago but he integrated himself into their tight knit community. Jess was a loner who stole from Neighbors and got the precious Rory into a car accident. He will always be an outsider.

Do we see Dean eat something at Luke's aside from the time where he and Rory have breakfast there and Lorelai walks up and down the street a few times before entering? For all we know Luke refused to serve him ;-) And rightfully so.

Now that you mention it no lol. I remember him ordering a coffee on Rory's birthday, the breakfast you mentioned, and then ordering a ton of food for the construction crew. I guess his mom cooked every night or he got takeout elsewhere after the fight lol.

Infantile is the word. Actually, I think that scene is supposed to show babyish-ness. Rory is emotional and doesn't know how to handle it, so she regresses to the level of a little kid saying "mine!" She's angry, hurt and defensive, and she's not making a lot of sense. She doesn't even speak in complete thoughts; just "My town! I leave!"
So I don't think we're supposed to read too deeply into who does and doesn't belong in Stars Hollow. The most we can really get out of it is that Rory is off-balance and groping for something to give her the upper hand. And all she can come up with is that this is her territory, so... she wins!
Rory's behavior was indeed intended to come off as childish in that scene. It was the immediate reaction to being confronted by a guy who pretty much abandoned her and the residual/left-over teenage emotion of that relationship.
shareYes i agree she was hurt and and did feel abandoned, and had no way to deal with all the emotions in her head so chose to react childish and strop just like my teenage daughters would have done at the same age.
