Christopher & Gigi, Luke & April

Binge watching and age gives you a different perspective on favorite TV shows. The scuppering of Lorelai's love life due to secret babies a lazy plot device when done TWICE! And throughout season 6, we saw both Christopher and Luke reject Lorelai's involvement in the raising of their daughters, only to come back contritely when they realize they're in over their heads.

Was there supposed to be something significant about this mirroring of Chris and Luke, or was it throwing plot points at the wall to see what stuck?

(And on a shallow note, Sherilyn Fenn would have been a terrible Lorelai Gilmore. Too much gravitas for how the character is envisioned. Lauren brought a youthful flightiness, yet maturity that seems natural in a woman who grew up while raising a child.)

Yeah I can't see her as Lorelai at all. Her little quips come off more aggressive and harsh while Lauren brings a light quality to the role while still nailing the heavier scenes in the show. I don't know if they intended for those situations to mirror each other. I know that Sherry getting pregnant and Christopher raising Gigi alone was used to mirror Lorelai raising Rory alone and give him a taste of his own medicine so to speak. Luke's secret daughter just seemed like more of a plot contrivance to stir up drama even if both of them were used for that purpose. I always wanted Lorelai to end up with Chris so I was very irritated with Sherry being pregnant at that moment. After giving it some thought I do think it's interesting that they both rejected Lorelai's involvement. Luke's wasn't properly explained but it makes sense because Lorelai can be a bit of a know it all particularly about raising kids i.e. their fight over Jess. As others have stated on here before, Luke worrying that the Jess situation would repeat itself would've made a better explanation for his behavior. I think using that plot twice was pretty silly and the second time they managed to make it even worse by including Anna(the worst character ever).

I disagree on Chris being left to raise Gigi on his own to mirror Lorelai. ASP writes for actors, or so she has said, and giving in to Luke/Lorelai meant she couldn't invite guest stars (think of every other boyfriend of Lorelai's, she liked working with those actors; Chris was barely even mentioned when she had CE's Jason to occupy her). Marrying Chris off also took him away from being a Luke/Lorelai obstacle, which was one of his main purposes. His running off to pregnant Sherry was good drama in the moment, but it took Chris out of the game.

But a simple Sherry-ectomy took care of that! Bring on David Sutcliffe and problems for L/L!

I see the two plots being redundant. Just when things are finally perfect between Lorelai and Chris/Luke, their future is ready to be wonderful and it's going to stick, a kid pops up to ruin it. And then neither guy could manage being a dad to their kid at the same time as being with Lorelai.

Don't forget the spinoff that never happened. Jimmy had a long-lost kid, too. Well, not lost, but unknown to his significant other.

I don't think Chris' and Luke's situations mirrored each other at all. Lorelai didn't need to be involved in raising GiGi because Sherry was raising her. Once Sherry ran off to Paris, Chris asked Lorelai for help. Then Rory issued an ultimatum to Chris to stay away from Lorelai, but he and Gigi still met Lorelai for lunch. I agree that Chris raising GiGi alone was meant to mirror Lorelai raising Rory alone.

How cool was it that they got two of the Twin Peaks babes to be potential rivals for Lorelai!

Agree about Sherilyn. Lauren was perfect as Lorelai. Love Ms Fenn as an actress and I really liked the character of Anna before they turned her into a weirdo. Who wouldn't be ok with their ex-partner's fiancé getting to know their kid? Most people would be delighted! If it was a short relationship and they had just started dating then sure. But they were getting married. Although it was clearly made that way to make Luke and Lor split.

I agree on lazy plot device. It's as though ASP couldn't be arsed to come up with something different so she just rehashed her old formula and used it again.
