Richard and Rory

I just finished the episode where Rory puts together that event for the DAR. Towards the end of the episode Richard and Mitchum talk in the bathroom about how Mitchum doesn't believe Rory has what it takes to make it in journalism. He goes outside to cool off and comes back in while Rory is making her "thank you for coming to this event" type of speech. The whole episode ends with Richard staring disappointingly at Rory on stage.

Does anyone think that Richard is considering / agreeing with what Mitchum said in that moment? I know a couple episodes later he goes to Lor to try to start a plan to get her back to school, but tonight while watching it just seeemed as if he MIGHT have slightly agreed with Mitchum in that moment to me.

No I don't believe that he ever believed Mitchum's criticisms. I think in that moment he was very concerned about Rory not bouncing back and not achieving her dreams. Then of course the realization that he made a mistake and Lorelai was correct. If I'm remembering correctly this DAR event was in episode 5 and Richard approaches Lorelai in episode 6. Emily was accurate in her assessment in the 21st birthday party episode that Richard doesn't want Rory to become her. Rory was seen as having more to do in life than to throw parties and schedule events.

You bring up a good theory, but I think it was more of him realizing, "She's lost what she had," rather than, "She doesn't have it."

I agree with the other comments here. Richard and Emily only had heard what happened to Rory with that internship. It finally hit Richard that what Lorelai told him was true and that he should have listened to her. He heard it straight from the source and it stung. Don't forget...Logan's family was supposed to be good friends of the Gilmore's.

I think Richard looked down on a lot of people and had a lot of pride due to his social status. He always was proud to have Rory as a granddaughter -- ivy league bound, a reader, wants to be a reporter, discover Fez, globe trot etc. He didn't have a granddaughter who only cared about partying, boys, clothes etc. Don't forget he had a portrait of her in his study....of her reading. He saw that Rory's future was derailed and it was all because of Mitchum. I also think he looked down on what she was doing at the D.A.R as being frivolous. Which is not fair because some event planners make very good money, it is not that easy to put together a sold out event when you are a 20 year old with no experience at it...

All in all he wanted "more" for Rory and recognized that he had played a part in her departure from Yale, a school that he probably loved second to Emily.
