It was never shown how the accident happened . I'm betting that when Rory saw some furry animal running across the street , she quickly grabbed the steering wheel , turned it sharply to the right , causing the car to crash into a tree . But nobody caould bring themselves to believe that Little Rory could do any wrong .
shareYeah it never made any sense that everyone only blamed Jess. They were equally responsible. But the town never really blames Rory for anything, Jess was the outcast of the town immediately upon arrival. Rory tries the whole episode to get people to blame her. It's not like he stole her car or forced himself into the driver's seat, she gave him the keys. It is usually never good to allow anyone to drive your car, they weren't even dating. Also it was an accident that anyone could of had. He swerved to avoid hitting an animal. Rory could of done the same thing herself. It wasn't exactly reckless driving. Although they say if you think you are going to hit an animal hit it head on, swerving could make it worse. You could end up hitting a human or causing greater harm to yourself. The fact that no one was hurt and it was a fairly minor accident actually says a lot about Jess.
Also not sure why she even had her car there. Did she drive to Luke's? Lorelai hardly ever drove there herself, they usually walked...why was her car even there?
I thought it was dumb to blame anyone. They should've been grateful that no one was seriously injured. They basically unleashed all of their past issues with Jess in that situation and they swerved to avoid killing an animal. He wasn't drunk and driving. I'm honestly shocked that Dean wasn't more upset that Rory allowed Jess to drive a car that he built for her.

Same! When I first watched it I expected Dean to blow up. He kicks his bag and is obviously angry but he isn't really mad at Rory. All he cares about is that Jess is gone. I thought he would of been hurt over the fact that Jess (the enemy) was driving the car he built with his own hands for Rory the love of his life. She gave him the keys. Then he invites her in for roast and they never talk about it again.
shareI was hoping they would break up then instead of dragging the relationship out more. It just became sad to watch after that episode.
