What does prozac really do to you?

My councelor prescriped prozac to me, and my mother is getting the pills today. My friends keep telling me I shouldn't take them, they are telling me all these bad things that they do to you. But I want to know, what exactly do they do and can they help or do they even help at all?

If you are deeply depressed, prozac can help pull you out of it. It saved my life 15 years ago.

however, theres a chance it might make it worse like what happened to me. it all depends on your body and your "chemical inbalance" situation.

luckly i got out of my depression less than a year ago. drug free too =]

^Anyone who knows anything about antidepressants knows that you can't get high off them in that manner.

The only bad thing i've ever noticed is that they make you numb, they don't make you happy. But for me feeling numb for a few months while i fought my way out of depression was better than slipping further into it without help.

It's true, but depending on a person. If one relies only on a drug there is no real chance to ever get rid of depression. And too many people don't know how to quit. In fact, it doesn't make you as dependent as many other medications do, but a depressive person is often too afraid to quit, scared that the depression could go worse, so they insist on taking it forever. And this is a very reliable way to stay in condition when you are not crying all the time (because you can't cry anymore) but you can't become any happier as well.

obvz it depends on the person and what they're taking it for...i take it for anxiety disorder NOS (i have fluctuating symptoms of all anxiety disorders--GAD, OCD, panic disorder, etc) and it helps to calm me and my obsessive thoughts way down. . .

yes they can definitely help!
but one med doesn't fit all, just keep that in mind.

good luck hun. :)

I guess we got the same dreams...or is it the same nightmares?

prozac has helped me IMMENSELY, but remember, you can't just take the pill and expect to be cured. the drug helped me have a more positive outlook on life, and helped me feel more confident. but what helped me get through my depression was engaging in things i love.

i do think prozac has had some not so good side effects however. i've been taking it for a year, and recently i've been fearing i might have serotonin syndrome, because i have wildly overactive reflexes, and some of the other side effects. but i don't know for sure.

it's different for everybody, but hey it worked for me.

I have taken prozac every single day so far for almost a year because I have very intense anxiety. I can't say it has helped a whole bunch, but I have noticed I get less anxiety when bad situations show up. So, I don't know where all the negativeness is coming from, when in fact the drug has helped lots of people. My father takes prozac, but in a much higher dose and if he didn't he would be practically suicidal because he suffers from severe depression.

To be honest, I didn't notice any change at all. Of all the anti-depressants prescribed to me, I found them to be the least effective. I have heard of a lot of people who are helped by them though, hopefully you will be!

When I went to rehab, everyone had to see a psychiatrist (which doesn't make sense to me in the first place since you're at a place to get off a substance to be put on more substances) and I got prescribed this thing similar to Prozac called Cylexa for anxiety. Its main purpose was to treat depression but they said it also works for anxiety. After a few weeks of taking it up until I even got out of rehab, I felt little to no results. When it was time for my refill I had told them it wasn't doing anything and then they tried to get me on Prozac. The Prozac helped a little bit more I guess you could say, but I never saw huge results and that might be because I don't think I suffer from clinical depression, just good old fashioned situational depression and a severe case of anxiety. If anything, I noticed while I was on it, it almost didn't let little things really get to me or bother me. But I wasn't even taking that many MG's to begin with, and they were suppose to upgrade the amount of MG's I was taking with the next refill, which they lied to me about, so I eventually just stopped taking it all together and now I'm on nothing. It works different for everyone, and a lot of people have to make sure that they're taking it around the same time every 24 hours or else you'll confuse your body.
