what was wrong with rafe's sister?

i've seen that disorder before.

reply

Some sort of brain damage, I would say.

reply

i'd say maybe autism...

reply

I think she was autistic. I watched an interview with Emily Perkins (the girl who plays the sister). She was talking about the Autism Society (I guess she's a spokesperson for it or something.) And she began talking about how in Prozac Nation she played an angry autistic girl.

It's quite simple, really; seems her Prozac prescription ran out the day before Ricci got there.

that was NOT autism! autists don't really move much at all and are only focused on one thing, completely closed off from the outer environment

my guess is some severe form of encephalitis. i once saw a person with tick-borne encephalitis which was left untreated, and he acted very much like she did. it couldn't have been any disease acquired at birth anyway, because she looked far too healthy for that

Not always...Asperger's Autism Disorder is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder. Both Asperger's Disorder and Autistic Disorder are in fact subgroups of a larger diagnostic category. This larger category is called either
Autistic Spectrum Disorders or Pervasive Developmental Disorders.

Patients with Asperger's Autism can follow directions once they are given definitive tasks repeatedly. They can also restructure their social skills to interact more appropriately when they realize they are more effectual individuals and accomplishmore of the goals they desire.

Wow!!! You have it completely wrong. I grew up with a brother who behaved much like the sister in the movie. He was autistic. Because they cannot communicate like most of us, they act out a lot more out of frustration of not being understood... outbursts like that are VERY common.

I'm not an expert on the subject or anything, so I can't say, but that does NOT look like autism to me. She reminded me of Liv Ullmann's younger sister in Bergman's "Autumn Sonata" (a beautifully devastating film), but I forgot what her condition was called.

Rett Syndrome.

Pretty sure Rett Syndrome girls die at a young age.

She appeared to me mostly like someone with cerebral palsy.

reply

I assumed it was Autism as well.

But there may have been other underlying factors going on too.
