the snes version was crud compared to the 64 version. there's simply no comparison. better music, better graphics, four players, block fort! case closed :)
shareI'm with Big on this one.
Although I know we're in the minority for some reason.
To me, nothing compared to the 64 version.
Not even the subsequent sequels (which in my opinion got old fast).
It was not more than a year ago when a few of my buddies hooked up the N64 and we played multiplayer on Mario Kart for hours.
It still holds up.
A 3-D Spaghetti Western rereleased to theatres cominatyanoir3d.com Comin' soon!
yeah I grew up with both, it was all about the 64 version, SIMPLY for 4 player games.
shareI have alot of experience with both games. My brothers bought both games shortly after their releases in 1992 and 1996.
Overall, the classic gamer in me does give Super Mario Kart a 10/10, but I think MK64 has the slight edge, with a better 10/10 (Hey, I make my own rules). I haven't bothered with the other 6 or whatever games except playing a little bit of MK on the Game Boy Advance.
Lets see what is better about MK64
1) Track layout, 3-D design, variety of courses (Bowser's Castle being the epitome of all MK courses).
2) Multi-player (4-player mode vs 2-player). But the multi-player is still BEAST in SMK as well.
3) The AI was better (but there were some annoying things like the turbo speed when they break away from the pack and the finish order being set immediately when you cross the line).
4) The blue shell (the weapon I dreamed of before MK64 came out).
5) The ability to use ghosts in single player and steal CPU items. Ghost invincibility was also new in MK64.
Lets see what is better about SMK
1) Driving variability. There were basically 4 different driving styles. DK could literally go full beast mode and smash a poor little Princess or Toad to oblivion.
2) I think Rainbow Road, the staple of the MK franchise, was better in SMK. It was certainly more challenging. Seeing the rails in the MK64 version was a bit of a letdown.
3) Green/Red shells. All shells fired faster and straight out of the front of your kart for a nice, easy shot. Green shells could even be layed out. Red shells were more deadly than in MK64 because they were much faster. In MK64, the shells were slower getting to the target.
4) The feather and mushroom/turbos. The feather was actually not available in many races in SMK (ie Mario Circuit, Donut Plains, etc) but was an excellent way to show off some short cut skills on those courses that it could be used on. The mushrooms and turbo tiles were much more valuable in SMK. You could literally jump huge chasms with a well timed mushroom. The supermushroom in MK64 is my most hated item in these two games.
